drive+play problems

Hey guys I picked up one of the old style harman kardon drive + play units to use with my old 3g ipod. I seem to be having some issues with it though. The instructions say when I plus it in to the ipod the ipod will say "OK to disconnect" and I'll see the splash screen then the now playing screen. When I plug in my ipod the drive+play screen turns off. If I push the power button it shows the splash screen and turns off. If I don't have the ipod plugged in I can browse the menu and settings of the drive+play just fine. I've got v2.2 firmware on the ipod and it works just fine on my computer. Any guesses as to what I might be doing wrong or how to get it to recognize the ipod properly?
