I was wondering if there is a way to have the artists that begin with a number i.e. 3 doors down, 50 cent, show alphabetized before all the artist that begin with A. right now they are after Z and id like to have them show first.

Good question, I always wish it would sort them that way as well but it doesn't

yeah it really annoys me as wel. it's like that on all iPods and on no iPod you have the ability to switch it off.
who the hell sorts numbers after Z? it's really really annoying, but I don't think we'll see that change :-( maybe some wise man will create a tool to do this? who knows.

Strange thing is, iTunes does the same thing, but it's only a recent addition - I think in version 7.4 or 7.5. Previously, it did do numbers then letters. No idea why they switched it up, but annoys me too...

Use the Sort Artist field.

Right-click one track--not the entire album, just one track--and hit Get Info. Click the Sorting tab. In the right column, second from the top, you'll see a field titled Sort Artist. iTunes will recategorize the artist listing based on what you type in here. Obviously, you can't just type 50 Cent in there, because it'll still list numbers after letters. So you'll have to use a bit of trickery: try typing AAA 50 Cent in the field, then hit OK. The track you selected should then be displayed at the top of your iTunes library.

Find the track again, right-click it, go down to Apply Sort Field at the very bottom of the menu, and select Same Artist. Voila, all of your tracks with the artist set as 50 Cent will now appear at the top of your iTunes library when you sort by artist.

Repeat as necessary.

This was changed in v7.3, and is probably one of the single most bizarre "features" Apple has ever added to iTunes.

The "Sort" fields that Desides describes above is the only way to change it. The sort orders specified in iTunes should also propagate to the iPod after a sync as well.

RE:50 Cent

This works great..the AAA sort artist trick, until you add a new record by the same artist, then you have 2 artists with the same name....dumb apple dumb. The same applies to records...

Apple...just give us classic sorting numbers and symbols before letters option and we'll shut up....or perhaps they like being derided....
