lately ive been having some issues with my touch's wi-fi connection strenght. this is the third one i've been through (first had a big dead pixel the second had a music playback issue). this one is flawless(wk 47) except lately my wi-fi signal has been pretty weak. compared to the previous ones this is the weakest strength. the others would be able to reach my router ( located in an office upstairs) from the kitchen. this one worked fine right out of the box but now it seem to be struggling to reach it from the same spot.
so i was wondering if the signal strength and how powerful the wi-fi device is, differs from one ipod to the next.

oh and also if the strength is depwndent on how full the battery is

Well, obviously, it shouldn't be effected by the battery and shouldn't differ between iPods. That being said, I wouldn't be entirely surprised if there were variations.

However, there are lots of other things that seem to effect wireless performance - cordless phones, microwaves, etc. can often spew out noise in the same or close bandwidths that can effect it. And I do think environmental conditions can change it up as well -- I can usually connect from the far end of my front yard to my wireless router no problem, but sometimes (usually at night), my performance will drop to almost non-existent even within the house.

In short - you may not always have the same strength wireless signal in the same location.

thank you. so it is variant on the environment at the time?

hmm sometimes the wi-fi says it has3 bars but then when i click on a link it drops to just one or it just disappears altogether.
i think this touch gave me the worst problems using safari. at least the other two could reach and sustain a session.

I don't take much stock in touch's WiFi signal strength meter, sometimes it shows only one bar on mine when I'm sitting with in three feet of the router. It also fluctuates from one bar to full strength when I'm on the couch 10-15 ft away.

I would also have to disagree with the others here. Even though there is lots in the environment that can effect the WiFi's signal I also believe there can be a difference in the hardware. It is entirely possible the WiFi chip and/or it's circuits can end up with a varying degree of sensitivity and selectivity during the manufacturing process. Radio waves, circuits and antennas are weird this way. I work in remote areas quite often where identical cell phones from the same manufacturer are side by side. While on the fringe area of the cell one may work where the other will not.
