iPod Touch randomly resets to home screen

I picked up a 16GB iPod Touch over the holidays and have noticed that it is randomly booting me out to the home screen once or twice a day.

Has anybody else seen this problem? It has happened when trying to view a video, play a song or surf the web. I've tried resetting the device through iTunes with no luck.

Any suggestions?

this happens when an application crashes. it doesnt pop up an error message or anything, it just closes.
It seems the ipod touch currently has some problems with memory managment. If, for example, you listen to music and surf big websites at the same time this happens quite often. Its a know bug, but since it seems likely that a new firmware will be released next week it will hopefully be fixed by then (I think it will because people have been complaining about this all over).

From time to time, this starts happening on my iPhone frequently as well.

The solution in my case is generally just to reset the device -- Just to a power-off by holding down the button on the top, slide to power off, and then restart the device.

Thank you both for your quick replies! If it's a known issue then I'm sure it will get addressed.

My 80GB 5.5gen *still* won't produce any audio on some occasions where the headphone jack gets unplugged, then plugged back in.

I'm not sure if this is the forum to ask-but has anybody heard about Live Updating getting fixed on the newer iPods?

It happens sometimes when I'm browsing on Safari. I think it's because the iPod isn't great at managing its memory.

Try emptying the cache (Settings > Safari > Clear Cache). That should clear up a bit of memory and stop Safari from crashing.

I've been having the same problem but it's a little different. I can use all the apps that came on my iPod Touch 2G, music even works, but any apps that I downloaded don't work. I can use an app, but almost immediately, it will reset back to the home screen. This only happens for downloaded apps. I already tried turning off the power and turning it back on; it didn't work. Any suggestions?
