I'm extremely interested in purchasing a iPod Touch with the major incentive being the wi-fi access to internet. Seeing as I don't want to buy one and then find out that there are very few places which can give me access.

Could you please tell me whether there are many problems in accessing the internet through the iPod Touch?

Also, would I be able to access the internet (through the iPod) at home as I have wireless internet.

Any help would be appreciated (ASAP if possible)

there are some problems accessing if there is a password needed. but it is pretty easy to work it will pick up any signal strong near you that is strong enough

Thanks for that.

Will it work in my house if I have wireless?

I'm hoping that it will work more often than not, otherwise I might as well buy an iPod Classic.

It appears to be a standard 802.11 connection mostly.
I have been driving around with mine seeing how well it will pick up networks of my clients houses as compared to my Powerbook.
It works just a tiny bit less well for me,the signal strength is just slightly less strong.
It has no problems connecting though and I have entered passwords a few times too.

I am having a good time with this,it is very liberating to me!

The only major problem I have seen is in a campus or business setting that uses wireless security WPA Enterprise, the rest are common wifi issues that happen with most any wifi device.

Do you have to pay for the wi-fi service on the iPod touch?

Well, that depends on where you're access wireless. For example, at your home, obviously you only pay for your internet connection. If you're out at free hotspots like Meijer, Panera Bread or Qdoba, you pay nothing. If you go to Starbucks, though, you have to pay with T-Mobile (I believe). You can find a list of hotspots at www.jiwire.com

Wi-fi works very well at home for me. I've also connected at a restaurant that had free wi-fi with no problem.

There is no additional fee to use wi-fi.

Does the wi-fi service cost anything?

Wi-Fi isn't a service like a cellular phone. As the posts above indicate, it doesn't cost to use it unless you use it at certain locations. Of course, unlike cellular, wireless access isn't everywhere - only in distinct locations.

Does anyone know if it's possible to pick up Wifi through my laptop? I have it wired in to a network at work, but we don't have wireless in the office. Can my laptop serve as a Wifi hub since it is hardwire connected, then access using the Touch? The laptop has wireless.

Yes it can. If you are using Windows, search for Internet Connection Sharing. If you're on a Mac, go to System Preferences > Sharing > Internet and turn it on...
