1. I'm not entirely sure
2. you put them under the "themes" folder, under summerboard, under library.
3. Adobe photoshop

1. choose the theme you want to use in summerboard. then SSH into your ipod and go to /private/var/root/Library/SummerBoard/Themes. then go into the folder that is named like the theme you are using. there should be a Wallpaper.png in there. if there isnt that just means that theme has no wallpaper. if there is, back it up by renaming it to "Original_Wallpaper.png" or something. then copy the image you want as background into that folder and name it Wallpaper.png. restart your ipod and you got your own background.
2. Same thing actually. Every Theme consists of a Wallpaper.png which is the background of the Theme and a folder named "Icons". in the icons-folder there should be an icon for every app. So if you want Safari to have a different icon and not the standard one, create an icon, name it "Safari.png" and put it in the Icons-folder.
If you got a wallpaper and all icons you want to replace create a folder that has the same name as your theme should have later. Put the Wallpaper.png and the Icons-Folder in there and upload it to /private/var/root/Library/SummerBoard/Themes
select the theme in summerboard and you're done.
3. if you made a slider upload it either to
/private/var/root/Library/Customize/MainSliderImages
/private/var/root/Library/Customize/PowerSliderImages
/private/var/root/Library/Customize/CallSliderImages
depending on what slider you want to replace. then go to customize and select your new slider. I'm not 100% sure but I think you have to create a subfolder in the SliderImages-Folder and put your slider in there, but maybe its enough to put it in the SliderImages-Folder itself.
4. the dimension of the slider. the picture itself is 70*47px but the slider is only 68*44. the rest of the picture is the shadow of the slider.

you could just have taken a background from the summboard themes directory and looked up, but here you go: wallpaper should be 320*480 since this is the ipods display resolution.
yes you can put them in there. you cant view pngs that are made by apple because they created a new (very useless) png-format where they put some gibberish into the fileheader and they swap the blue and red channels. thats why your programs cant read them. I found a tool that solves this but its mac-only. if you have a mac anywhere near you and want to use it I can look it up for you.

I think I know what you mean :D go into the installer and install "MobileFinder". this allows you to browse your ipods harddrive from the ipod. but what has this to do with this topic?

You did the install on BigBoss for the NES ROMs? Should work fine :( I'd check to see if they are loaded into ~/Media/ROMs/NES/ - capitalization is important... Might have had a bad install of the NES or ROMs - not sure...
As for gsPhone - you need to make sure you get a copy of the gb_bios.binfile and it has to be installed INSIDE the application (you can navigate into it using CyberDuck or WinSCP). You then need to make sure you set the correct ownership permissions (which I believe should be 755). Unfortunately, I can't help with the PSX - haven't tried it out...
