ipod nano 1st gen. help

i have the ipod nano 4gb. 1st gen. when i plug it into my computer it says " firewire connections are not supported. to transfer songs, connect the USB cable provided. press center to dismiss" ive charged it on different computers but this is the original usb cord it came with. how do i transfer my songs? and i cant get a new ipod my insurance is up =(. why does it keep doing this!?!?!?

My best guess is that you are plugged into a low power port, have a bad cable or you need to reset the iPod.

I can't find anything on this.
