the iphone does not support this feature. The workaround that I use is simple. I use teleflip to send text messages anyways, since mail on the iphone with IMAP enabled is virtually the same at SMS.
What you do is send an email with the receiving person's phone as the email address with the teleflip domain after it ie: 1234567890@teleflip.com The person will get the text just as normal, with minimal advertising from teleflip, and also the person can directly reply to the message and it will come through as an email on your phone.
This method costs nothing, and you can essentially send 100 "SMS's" in the form of emails if you wanted to.

yea, thats what ive been reading too. Its a shame, I think more people ultimately would be interested in MMS than multiple SMSing but whatever.

If you want to (risk) jailbreaking your iPhone you can use this:

so what email does it register out of then? I have two setup on my mail in iphone and they are two different yahoo mail accounts....will they show up in your sent folder in your mail boxes?? thanks for the info!!!!!

yes they show up in the sent mail folder just like a normal email. It will put your email address as the return address for people receiving your message. It is super efficient. Some messages dont get through but I'd say its like less than 4% that dont.

Just jailbreak and install one the 3 or 4 SMS apps that support multiple recipients, searching, forwarding, templates etc.

Hey,
I tried this twice today to two different people using area code then number then @teleflip.com they havent gone through...I dont think this site is as reliable as you are saying. Can anyone else confirm that this works 96% of the time?? Or do you have to sign up on their web site that was not mentioned above at teleflip.com???? for it to start working from your phone?? please advise someone who uses this. thanks,

Teleflip looks like a cool service, but it requires you to enter each person's phone number into your message each time. I just want to tap a few names and send the message to their phones. Let's hope 1.1.3 has support for multiple SMS recipients. :-)

well look here's what I do with teleflip: I create a new email address in a contact and make the label "text" then when I want to send to multiple people I just use the mail app and send like a normal email. Its not that hard people iPhone supports multiple email addresses for each contact. I have great reliability when sending to both verizon and AT&T customers. I use both the computer and the iPhone with this service to send literally hundreds of text messages for free each month. By the way I live in northern California.

I thought about creating another email entry for each contact, and that wouldn't be too hard, I suppose. What I didn't think about was the fact that this would allow me to send text messages to multiple recipients from the desktop in Apple Mail (or whatever email client one uses that syncs with iPhone). That makes this method, in my opinion, worth considering a second time.

Hello,
You still havent answered my question, for this to work, do you have to register your phone and email on teleflip.com site first for it to work? I did it twice and both didnt go through, but I didnt register on the site yet. Just wondering. thanks,

Dean C, teleflip doesn't work in the UK, or in Canada (where I'm from). There is an alternative though. This little under-market, under the PDA giants, is funny, but there's lots of space in it.
If you're a resident of the UK, check out Meemo. It's a service that's been out in North America now for a while that offers any regular phone unlimited mobile e-mail for about 5 bucks a month (it'll be something different in the UK, under or around 3 Euros or something). I know that they're scheduled to get into the UK market - it should be happening soon. They offer a free trial through their site. Google it.
Anyway, that doesn't change the fact that sometimes it seems people in Canada and the UK get the last kicks at the proverbial can on certain products.
