Now that i have an iphone, i need a car charger for it. Do all the ipod car chargers work on the iphone as well?

I have heard very bad things about the griffin iphone charger, and amazon/google checkout sells all kinds of them, but again, not many reviews on any of these things.

Suggestions?

Most current iPod chargers will work fine with the iPhone, since it uses the same pins for charging as any other model of iPod.

Note that accessories such as FM transmitters which perform other functions in addition to charging may not work, since the iPhone may detect them as "not compatible" and disable the Dock Connector port. FM transmitter compatibility seems to be largely hit-and-miss at this point, although most of the mainstream products by Griffin, Belkin, and Kensington work fine in our testing.

I use the griffin power pod and it works fine.

One thing you want to be wary of is using a car charger at all that is not Apple certified with the iphone. Reason being is different car chargers have different amperage and charging specs, not to mention the varying power increases and decreases that are associated with car chargers of any kind. When using a car charger, engine RPM, battery type / size / strength and other factors including your car's wiring all have an impact on the way the phone is charged.

So anyways, if you care at all about your iphone's battery life, wait for an Apple certified car charger if you insist on charging the iphone in the car. For some business people waiting is just not an option though.

.....or get an Apple-certified iPod charger, as described above.

While your points about using a non-certified charger (car or otherwise) are definitely valid, particularly with the wide variety of cheap iPod accessories out there, the reality is that any car charger from a reputable company (ie, Griffin, Belkin, etc) will not cause any more problems for the iPhone than it will for the iPod.

well all I'm saying is that ive had car chargers destroy more than one iPod so to each his own. Peoplel can do what they want obviously. When it comes to my investment however, I dont like to take chances.

Sure, and as I pointed out above, the reality is that there are so many cheap knock-off accessories out there that you really do take your chances with anything that's not from a reputable manufacturer.

All I'm saying is that as long as you're buying an accessory from a reputable "Made-for-iPod" certified accessory company (Belkin, Griffin & Kensington come to mind, to name a few), then there's really nothing to worry about. The iPhone charging circuit is nothing special or more fragile than an iPod charging circuit -- they charge in pretty much the same way.

thats not true. there are plenty of stories of the griffin powerjolt burning up and frying peoples iphones and ipods as well as stories about the belkin chargers. you can read the one star reviews on the power jolt on apples webstore and see about 20 examples of this charger destroying phones.

i'm going through this nightmare now. my iphone has completely fried. i've spent all day looking for answers to my issue, and i'm 100% positive that all of this is due to my griffin car charger. i've had problems before. one time, after disconnecting the iphone, i was locked in some sort of airplane mode and couldn't get out of it until i connected the phone to my desktop. another time, once again after disconnecting from the charger, my phone changed languages. i had an italian iphone for six hours, it was horrific. and now finally, it wont turn on. not after a full charge or connection to my laptop.
it wasn't until i read this thread that it finally dawned on me that the griffin was the constant in every malfunction, and i'm ####ed off. namely because of the ridiculous design flaw inherent with this phone wherein you cannot save contacts to the sim. i'm afraid i've lost everything since this meltdown. maybe i'm looking in the wrong place, can someone help or tell me why i cannot find my contacts?
thanks

my iphone has totally fried, and i attribute it to the griffin car charger. are you saying that it may just be a bad battery? that this condition may not be terminal?

(please god...show yourself)

I have a BMW with an iPod integration kit for BMW's iDrive. I am assuming it's "certified". Anyway, it works and even though the iPhone says, "Not compatable" and gives me the airplane mode option, it still charges just fine.

you can take your iphone to the apple store and they will give you a new one if it is in warranty. does your charger say it works with iphones?

while not iphone certified, the griffin autopilot (http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/autopilot) works great with my iphone. i do have to acknowledge the message about the device possibly causing interference, but now i can charge my iphone and get a clean line out signal to my radio. the bonus is that i can ff, rewind, play and pause directly from the autopilot.

A similar thing happened to me last week, I have an iPod car charger from Tesco and when I plugged it into my phone it restarted instantly. I unplugged it straightaway and noticed that the previously half full battery was giving me a 10% battery remaining. When attached to a computer the phone showed in iTunes but would not charge, neither when using the AC adapter. I tried a factory reset which kept failing and when I tried to boot the phone again I got a bright white screen with black "static" lines running across it.

I'm hoping it is just the battery, I've ordered one which should be here tomorrow and I'll see what happens. Sadly Apple would not fix the phone because I bought it in the US and now live in the UK.

I'm looking for an iPhone car charger as well. I bought one of these on eBay

But the iPhone makes this wierd high pitched sound (like a grounding problem) when I'm charging it. I'm looking for recommendations for an iPhone car charger.
