So I got an iPod Nano 8GB for Christmas, which was great for a couple of hours, before it failed.

I ripped some of my CDs and plugged my iPod in to update. It added all the songs, then said "OK to disconnect" while that white bar started to fill up. It stopped halfway, with the white bar not moving for 5 minutes, so I just turned it off and on. It said there was nothing on there -- 0 songs, 0 videos, 0kb free (just a second ago it was 78 songs with 7-something GB free).

So I plugged it back in, iTunes detected a corrupted iPod and told me to restore. So I did. Halfway through restoring, iTunes froze completely, so I had to kill it and restart the program. I restored it again, successfully, got a message saying "Your iPod is now restarting, this message will be dismissed in 15 seconds and the iPod will be added to the iTunes source lists on the left". So I wait, then get an error that says, yet again, "Corrupt iPod, use iTunes to restore".

So I use iTunes to restore, it does, then 15 seconds later -- "Corrupt iPod, use iTunes to restore." So I use iTunes to restore, it does, then 15 seconds later -- "Corrupt iPod, use iTunes to restore." Again. And Again. And Again. Nothing changes. On the screen is a black-and-white, oddlooking "Do not disconnect" sign. If I unplug it, it changes to a black-and-white "OK to disconnect" sign with a tick, but never goes back to a main menu or anything.

I'm really depressed that it screwed up so quickly, I'd really, really appreciate any advice anyone could give. :'(

I had a similar thing happen with my 4g nano I got for Christmas. Except iTunes continually said it was in in 'recovery mode' I tried and tried for hours to restore, but to no avail, always stuck in recovery.

Eventually I packed the whole thing away and planned on returning it to the store. About 2 hours later I thought I might give it another go (after searching the forums and google and trying every know fix without success) My comp had been off for a couple of hours as had the ipod. Then, I did a hard reset (for about the 10th time that day) I went through what I thought would be the whole crazy thing again, and it started to sync perfectly with itunes, and it still works now. For some reason, just leaving both the ipod and computer off for a couple of hours seemed to do something.....may not help you, but worth a try.

Easiest way: Return it and get a new one ;)

Attempt to change the drive letter of the iPod to something far down the list so it doesn't get interfered with by other peripherals you may use, then attempt a restore and see if that helps.
