I'm considering jailbreaking my iPod touch and was watching a video on YouTube concerning the matter. The person jailbreaking the touch chose to install SSH, but never explained what it was or what you use it for. Can someone clear this up?

SSH stands for Secure Shell.
It is just a protocol that allows you to access your ipod touch from your desktop PC or mac and execute commands on it (thus allowing you to copy any kind of data to the ipod touch without itunes). it's also used for a lot of customization things if you know what you're doing. I'd highly advise you to install SSH, since it's needed for some apps (for example if you install a GBA emulator you have to get your GBA-ROMs to the touch. this is impossible without SSH).

use a program like cyberduck on mac or WinSCP on windows and you can browse your ipod like any other hard drive and explore it's content (which can be very interesting).

SSH stands for Secure SHell - it allows you to upload files to your iPod Touch and it allows you to remotely run commands on the iPod Touch... learn more on Wikipedia...

Why would you bother doing that though if you can just jailbreakme.com and have it do everything for you? You can just install the customizer and pretty much run it right from the touch.

please don't spread false information.
this is not true! jailbreakme.com only works for 1.1.1 firmware, NOT for 1.1.2!

Ya...........thats why you downgrade first. There also was no mention of him doing it on 1.1.2 anyway.

and then you upgrade and you have to do exactly the process he mentioned above. so you have to do it anyway.

doesn't really matter for the topic itself anyway.
I was just saying that it ISN'T as easy as going to jailbreakme.com and that's it, because you have to upgrade to 1.1.2 afterwards and then jailbreak it again without jailbreakme.com ... that's all I was saying.
your post sounded like "SSH doesn't matter since you can just go to jailbreakme.com and that's it" and that's just not true. it doesn't matter as long as you're running 1.1.1, but the moment you switch to 1.1.2 (and most people want to) this isn't true anymore.

but whatever ...

Lol ok I assumed people in the thread knew that.

Why do you have to downgrade to 1.1.1 and jailbreak that before you can jailbreak 1.1.2?

Oh, and thanks for the help :]

Why do you have to downgrade to 1.1.1 and jailbreak that before you can jailbreak 1.1.2?

because on 1.1.1 the mobile safari browser has an exploit which allows jailbreaking in the first place. so you downgrade, jailbreak by just visiting jailbreakme.com on your touch, then install a program called "oktoprep" which allows you to jailbreak 1.1.2. so you upgrade to 1.1.2, then jailbreak 1.1.2 (this is done via your desktop PC / mac) and after that you got a jailbroken touch with 1.1.2 firmware where you install all the apps you want and have full access to the filesystem via SSH
