View Full Version : How do YOU shut your iPod Touch off?

Do you use the single tap of the power button and boot to slider or do you actually hold the power button down and do the slide to power down method? How much battery power does keeping it in standby take and what is the advantage of shutting it down fully by use of the slider?

I never shut my ipod off. I just click the top button once so the screen turns off.
I do it this way because I can turn it back on again much quicker and secondly because it uses less battery. Shutting the iPod off and back on causes it to load the OS, which needs a lot of battery power. the advantage of really shutting it off is that your iPod restarts, so
unneeded apps which are running in the background are closed and all your memory is freed. it can be useful if your iPod is a little laggy or if any other problem occured, but otherwise I wouldn't do it.

I just "sleep" my iPod Touch, and about once a week I turn it all the way off to clear programs/processes... I've never seen sleep use up battery power... It seems to real put it entirely off. All the background apps seem to be turned off/slept completely after about 1 minute (you can ping your iPod Touch for about 30 seconds or so after you sleep, then it goes off)...

iPods have never really turned off anyway so I don't see the harm in simply putting the iPod touch in sleep mode. That is how the 1G iPod was and I my 3G iPod was the same way. iPods will completely turn themselves off after being in sleep mode for a period of time anyway so I wouldn't imagine the battery juice that you save to be substantial by turning it all the way off to begin with.

Standby doesn't use much battery power at all, so is much better in most cases than taking the time to fully shut down and start up.

Which leads me to my next question. Does this work the same as it does on the video for the touch? Where if I don't use it for 12 hours or whatever it boots from the apple logo instead of slapping on or no matter how long i have it off it will always pop right back up to the slide to unlock screen?

This used to happen with both my 5G and 5.5G video iPods. In the morning, the iPod would show the Apple logo, then turn on. I thought both of mine were defective, I guess not. My Classic never did that, by the way.

Does it do that for the Touch still though?

Sorry, I'm not sure. I haven't gotten my Touch yet. Hopefully it doesn't, it's pretty annoying.

I don't think it does. I left my touch unattended for more than 10 hours or so and it did not show the apple logo, it was right there. The touch doesn't really go off (the classic and nano 3g is the same btw), it just puts everything to sleep (including wifi). but it pops right back on when you turn it on. just establishing a wifi connection takes a few seconds but that's it.

I haven't left my iPod touch unattended for a long enough period to test that theory. When I had my iPod classic, I don't remember it fully shutting off either. I could care less if it fully shuts off or not as it only takes 10 seconds for an iPod to turn on from deep sleep mode. If you can't wait 10 seconds then the iPod completely shutting off is the least of your problems.

Thats what all 10 of the people I have asked have said. That makes me VERY happy :).

I think the longest I have left it unattended for was about 12 hours, maybe 12 hours. I couldn't really remember as I was sick a few days ago and I didn't feel like getting up out of bed so I used my iPod touch to surf the internet and everything. I then fell asleep at around 8:00 AM and woke up at around 8:00 PM. I then turned my iPod touch back on to surf the internet again. Although I kind of remember getting a phone call and having to check my e-mail so I am not 100% sure if I turned my iPod touch on during that period or not.

well, that's a) not very clean and b) does it not free your memory.
just shutting the ipod off from time to time to get rid of unused/unneeded things and just clear the iPods memory is actually a pretty good way to do it. I do it like every 4 days or so. depens on how my ipod is behaving.

Do you often experience the iPod Touch bogging down after regular use? If so that's............not so good.

well, it depends if you have jailbroken your touch or if you havn't. installing/uninstalling stuff slows down the ipod as does starting applications (since they keep on running in the background) and using programs who need a lot of memory (since it is not freed afterwards sometimes). this is all stuff that can slow down your ipod, so it's never a bad idea to just shut it off to get rid of all that.
it's like on a normal PC or mac ... leave it running for a week and it will have slowed down significantly. restart it and all will be back to normal (hopefully).

if you havn't jailbroken your touch and you're just using the apps that come with the touch you won't experience this (or it won't be very bad) since there are not that many apps, the apps are "apple-tested" (and, admittingly, apple may have some more experience in programming stuff for the touch than private people have) and, well, you just can't do as much as you can with a jailbroken touch.

What about if you only have Mail Stocks Weather Maps and iPhysics installed? All but one of those apps is apple tested and should work fine right?

Tested to run on the iPhone, yes. But the Touch and iPhone have significantly different batteries. I don't know how much of a difference it would make, but it is worth bearing in mind.

For the record, I only ever put my Touch to sleep. I rarely turn off the Wifi, but have started doing so when I'm out all day and am not using it apart from for music.

I 'restart' my Touch every few days or so.

How much overall do Jailbreak apps take out of your battery? Is the battery significantly lower with the apps installed than without?

I wouldn't say that it takes up any battery, or at best a very tiny amount. yeah, the apps you STARTED since you last rebooted your ipod (not the apps you installed!) are running in the background, but I don't think this takes up much battery. by all means, this is no reason to not jailbreak your touch if you wanna do it.
