View Full Version : Please tell me I'm not making a huge mistake....

I've had my 80GB Classic ever since it came out (previously owned a 5.5G 30GB), and I've been a bit disappointed with it. It's really laggy, and cover-flow takes a while to load (I use cover-flow primarily to play music). The screen size never really bothered me when I had my old iPod, but now I just can't bring myself to do any serious video watching, even though I own 75GB worth of video.

Anyway, lately I've been really wanting the iPod Touch. I think it would be perfect for my needs. I have lots of videos, a couple movies, and I have 1050 songs (about 1/3 are podcasts). I have 2GB free on my 80GB Classic. Is it a major mistake to get rid of my Classic and go with the iPod Touch? I'm planning on buying the 16GB version. Has anyone who made the switch really regretted it? I have to admit it was a bit annoying managing my library on my 30GB iPod, but I guess I can manage it with the Touch.

Are there any major problems with the Touch that I should be concerned about? Unfortunately I had no idea about the Classic's lag problems before I got it.

Sorry for the really incoherent post, haha, I'm pretty sleep-deprived.

You're not making a mistake. It seems like you love your movies (as most people do) and the Touch screen is fabulous (not to mention virutually scratch proof). I know 16 GB may not seem like much but I have a ton of audio on there and I keep a few videos when I want to watch them.

I never need my whole video library as I'm never gone from computer long enough to watch more than a couple of full length films. Podcasts are temporary - listen and delete. I don't have a lot of music - but enough to keep me entertained for a day.

Seriously - you'd be making a huge mistake by not getting the Touch (it's that good!)

Also, once you jailbreak the thing - it turns from a multimedia device into a full blown computer. It simply amazes me what you can do with it. It's far more powerful and user-friendly than my old Dell Axim x50v (which was no slouch) so that says a lot.

Wow, thanks Silver! You've pretty much convinced me that I'm making a good decision.

I was mostly concerned about the memory, but I guess that won't be a problem if I rotate my videos and podcasts. I will be keeping all of my music on it.

I'm scared to jailbreak it, is it easy to do? I had a Dell Axim x50v, too, if the Touch can perform like it, then I'm sold!

I went from a 160GB iPod classic to a 16GB iPod touch. The reason I returned my iPod classic is that the UI is buggy, I had issues syncing it to my car CD deck (even when I was using a simply line-out through the dock connector), and my unit was able to get about 30 hours of battery playback time when playing 190kbps VBR mp3's. My 5G 60GB iPod is rated for 20 hours of audio playback yet, when using 190kbps VBR mp3's, I continually got around 21-22 hours.

I have not looked back on the iPod touch, it is my main iPod that goes everywhere with me. The built-in wi-fi capabilities was the major reason for purchasing the iPod touch as my campus has free wi-fi and there are many hotels/motels that offer free wi-fi along with many fast food shops like McDonalds and Jack In The Box. I find the 16GB capacity to be more than enough space to hold my "best of" audio playlist, two 2 hour movies (or 3 1.5 hour movies), a dozen music videos, and all of my audio books. I still have about 1GB of space left which will let me add over 200 songs and a couple more music videos or one more 1.5 hour movie.

You just have to manage your iPod touch's content quite a bit. I think I sync it with my computer about once a week adding new songs to the best of playlist or taking some off. I have enough audio on there that I could listen to the iPod touch for a week straight without repeating one song. So 16GB is more than enough if you know how to use it. The only thing that I am hesitant on is that I know Apple is going to release a 32GB iPod touch next year or maybe even a 64GB iPod touch. That is alright though as I am working right now and can afford nice things in life, I will have a pay raise by then and will be able to afford another iPod. Still, it sucks for people who purchase a iPod touch and want it to last 3-4 years.

Yes jailbreaking is VERY easy if you go to www.jailbreakme.com from your iPod Touch. It is all automated and almost completely safe.

I'd say it's completely safe (not almost) - I haven't heard of one Touch turning into a brick because of jailbreaking. Plus if anything should go wrong, a quick Restore using iTunes will bring your machine back to life (if you should need to).

well, I switched from a 80GB classic to an 8GB touch because the classic's sound just sucks.
I havn't regrettet it, the touch is a great device. it has some firmware issues right now, but they will get fixed eventually.

but if you use your iPod to mainly watch videos it may be a bad choice.
first of all, the touches batterie lasts very very short. 20hours for audio, like 5 hours or so for video (haven't testet this yet) and if you have wifi turned on you can literally watch the battery meter getting empty. it will drain your battery in 3 hours or so.

if you really use it for watching videos a lot I would recommend you to look into the newest generations from archos, they make really great video devices.

but in the end, I'm really happy with the touch. except for some bugs that will be fixed and the battery issue it is a really nice device, especially when you've jailbroken it. jailbreaking is very easy. not as easy as described above, since that only works for older firmwares, but still pretty easy. and if something goes wrong just restore your device and try again.

Thats not at all true, unless your just leaving it on everywhere you go so its constantly searching for a signal (ie. your lazy or dumb). My wifi is always left on while at home and at work where I have access to a good signal and have no issues with the wifi draining the battery. You drain the battery by searching for signals when it can't find one (or your signal isn't solid and it keeps losing it) and by using internet applications....watching YouTube, streaming apple movie trailers, etc will obviously cut down on battery life.

So in short - if your in a place with no wifi signal - turn wifi off, its a pretty simple concept. If you have a bad memory just leave wifi off all the time and just turn it on when your gonna be using the internet applications.

Thanks for all of the responses, everyone! I sold my Classic and ordered a 16GB Touch from Apple. It will be delivered before Christmas, so that's pretty awesome. I'm so excited to get it! I'll play around with it for awhile before I install jailbreak. Thanks again!

yeah, well, that may be true. when I say wifi I mean "wifi turned on and using it", so my statement included you're surfing the web or watching youtube videos or anything. and if you do so, the battery drains really really fast.
I have never tested wifi without using an actual internet application since I turn off my wifi when I don't need it.

but it's possible you're correct, maybe wifi without using apps doesn't drain the battery (if the iPod sleeps it turns off wifi anyway).

Eh, wi-fi battery drainage is the same for any device whether it be a iPhone, PDA, iPod touch, or notebook. Wi-fi just eats up a lot of battery power, it is even evident with the Zune. I haven't had any issues with my wi-fi antenna turned on while doing other things. I can leave my antenna on (but close Safari or any other web apps) and simply listen to music. The battery will get around 20 hours or so. The battery will drain very quickly if you browse the internet while listening to music though and it will drain quickly if you watch YouTube videos. Then again, I don't know of anyone who is going to sit there with their iPod touch and watch 3-5 hours of YouTube videos.

my wi-fi stays on as well and it doesn't seem to effect the battery power too much if i'm only listening to music. you can always set the wi-fi to ask to join networks if you;re worried about connecting "by accident"

The iPod Classic is the only iPod left that actually uses a harddrive . . . everything else is Flash-based. What that means is the Flash-based models have much better battery life (no moving parts to power) and smaller enclosures.

I tried the iPod Classic at the Apple Store, and even the demo's GUI was buggy. I wanted to love it, but it really looks and feel antiquated next to the Touch.

I might pick up a Touch this holiday season, or I might wait for the next level up (32GB). I have a 40GB 3rd-gen now, so it wouldn't be that big of a sacrifice.

you should now that a recent firmware update (about 4 weeks ago or so) fixed most of the classics GUI bugs. it works much much faster now. just so you know. I still prefer the touch (had a classic before) since the classic has a new soundchip which really sucks (at least in my opinion, and a lot of people agree with me).

I really wish there was a 32GB Touch, also. Can't wait to get mine, though!

Hmm, that's weird, the firmware update didn't fix mine or make it go any faster. Maybe I just had bad luck with it?

A 32gb will come out in awhile, but 16gb stores a lot of stuff :)

16gb is great..if its for audio only anyone could manage that I'd think..in fact thats what I'd like the nano capacity to be at..but for a device that gloats about its large viewable screen it should have more capacity for video.

If I had only 1 iPod to choose from I would have got the 160gb classic...can hold loads more than the iPod Touch and does all the iPod features that the iPod Touch does (outside of eye candy).

Honestly capacity for me wouldn't have been much of a issue as I am 100% for the iPod being a audio player rather than a video player..HOWEVER the lack of FORWARD/BACK buttons really makes it a bummer for me..I know I'm getting one for christmas we will see how it plays out.

Like I said though if I only had one iPod to choose from the iPod Touch would be last on the list.

From what you've said, the touch obviously isn't for you. Although its promoted as an iPod, its primarily a multimedia device. I've probably used my touch for music less then anything else. The great thing for me about it is the awesome wifi features (excellent web browsing, email, youtube, etc) as well as the pictures and video which are a pleasure to view. As for the audio, i've got 6GB of my favorite songs and I have Simplify installed which allows me to access my entire library of music when I have wifi signal, so I really can't complain.

Simply put, there has never been a device i've been so satisfied with. People whine about what it can't do, I embrace what it can do and absolutely love it. In order to unleash the full potential though, it has to be jailbroken - otherwise its not worth the money and it really is "eye candy" as you called it.

So 16GB is more than enough if you know how to use it. The only thing that I am hesitant on is that I know Apple is going to release a 32GB iPod touch next year or maybe even a 64GB iPod touch.

A 64GB option would make me buy a Touch. 16GB is just not enough. I am not really willing to give up my 5G 80GB video ipod. I already have to manage 9,000-10,000 songs to keep it under the 80 GB limit (mostly at 256kps+, and no videos...explaining space considerations) . I could live with 64GB right NOW!

To each his own -- I don't think I really need more than 4,000 songs available to me at any one time, but that's just me. Funny how I used to get through college only carrying about 10 CDs around with my CD Walkman around campus and I thought that was cool, but now people need the equivalent of 400-500 CDs with them at all times. Boy we're fickle aren't we? Makes me wonder how our grandparents could deal with those old 78s that could only hold 1 song per side...

Exactly DerekVOF, it amazes me how much people whine about the capacity. I only got an 8gb despite having over 12gb of music alone and I've managed just fine. I'm heading to my parents for the next couple days with my touch filled with 850 songs, 3 full length movies, over 300 pictures and 6 games & numerous apps installed, I think I can live with that pretty easy. Plus if you wanna listen to a song from your library there's always Simplify to connect to and have access to your entire library via wifi.

As you pointed out, I think people have forgotten that with wireless access, you can have access to all of your music and videos with programs like Simplified or Orb...

Them there Internet tubes is amazin' things...

I just got my Touch today, and I'm already in love with this thing. I have to admit, it was pretty difficult to narrow my library down to fit, but now I'm fine with it. The Youtube app is awesome, and Safari is great. I haven't really used the music or video capabilities yet, but from what I see, I'm happy.

Congratulations! Once you get bored of the stuff built-in, go for the jailbreak and you'll discover a whole new world of usefulness :)
