Well, have you made sure that you're platform meets the minimum requirements? In particular, do you have USB 2.0 ports? Are you connecting directly to your computer (not via a keyboard or hub)? Are you running iTunes 7.5? How about your operating system - latest version with the needed service pack?

If you're running Windows XP, go to Control Panel -> System. Then select the "Hardware" tab, then click on the button that says "Device Manager". Down near or at the bottom of your list of equipment, you'll see the Universal Serial Bus Controllers - click on the [+] to expand it -- if you see listings for "Enhanced", you should have USB 2.0 ports. If not, you're most likely on USB 1.1.
If you're running Mac OS X, go to th Apple menu and select "About This Mac". Then click the button that says "More info...". Expand the "Hardware" section and select "USB" down near the bottom. In the USB Device Type, you should see USB High-Speed Bus and if you select it, you should see something that says the hub speed is 480 Mb/sec.
For Ubuntu and other operating systems, if the drivers or device chipsets say OHCI or UHCI, they're the older USB 1.1 chipsets. If they say EHCI, then they're the "new" USB 2.0 choipsets...
