This week my 16gb Ipod is struggling to see out a full day (roughly 3 hours usage) playing just music? The only thing I can think off is the weather which has been around freezing, still it's in a case and a pocket. Do apps like Customize continue to run in the background and drain the battery? I also bought a mains adapter, perhaps this has damaged the battery in some way?

Is WiFi turned off? I have noticed some programs such as iPsychics which I really love, will suck the life out of a battery like it is powering a hummer. Maybe try restarting it and see if the battery life improves. If that doesn't help, I would try Restoring the iPod and use it for a couple days without jailbreak and see if its any better. If not, Call Apple.

If you're just playing music, you should be getting a LOT more battery life - Apple says over 20 hours. Turn Wi-Fi off. Turn SSH off. Turn the brightness down from the max. Don't play any games or videos or surf or anything and see if you can get more battery life. If you're not getting better battery life after that, restore it and exchange it...

Had all those done already apart from the wifi bit, turned that off and the battery recovered somewhat, I've been running it down all night to discharge it so there was quit a bit of life there, I believe there's something going on with the battery indicator, perhaps not showing it's true charge.

That's possible. Just a note - I don't think you want to run it ALL the way down to like zero - I believe that can be problematic for the battery. And, no, the battery indicator is not 100% correct - I've had a couple instances where I restarted the iPod Touch and it dipped below the 20% warning, then I used it for another hour or two and then it "really" hit the 20% warning... kind of weird...

Cold can have an effect on the battery life. I know that I've gone from having over half left to completely drained withing 1/2 an hour. Though if it has the same problem while you're inside then it is probably some other problem.

Main adapter... if this is a generic adapter... don't tell Apple if yer gonna return the Touch.

usually completely discharging the battery will re-calibrate the battery charge counter. Typically with a lot of small recharges/discharges it will become inaccurate and sometimes cut the battery off earlier than it should.
Beware though, it's not good to discharge it completely on a usual basis.

If you've jailbroken your iPod Touch, you probably know what SSH is - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ssh
If you haven't, it doesn't matter for you...
