View Full Version : Firewire & Touch
I am replacing an older "classic" iPod with a new 16Gb Touch. This will be my 3rd iPod, and I used a Firewire cable to sync my previous iPods. My question: can I continue to use FireWire to sync the iPod Touch or does the iPod Touch support only USB? Thanks in advance for your help.
no, FireWire support ended with the 5g iPods, probably 2(?) years ago. I wouldn't worry too much about it. I have a 4g 20 G (which supports firewire), a 5.5g 80 (USB), and my new 16G touch, and after the initial sync, they are pretty much the same.

Although Soup is correct, the problem is that many of the older Macs and older PCs only supported USB 1.1 (like the iMac G4 Flatscreen) - those really don't work with the iPod Touch but they do have Firewire.
Unfortunately, if you've an older computer, you'll need to upgrade :(

Well, you won't need to upgrade. It is just that syncing will be rather slow on USB1.1 when compared to USB2.0. Any computer with PCI slots can be upgraded though to include USB2.0 and a 4 port USB2.0 card costs around $25 so it isn't that expensive. I remember purchasing a 3 port firewire card for my desktop back in 2003 with the release of the 3G iPod for around $30. So I think asking one to purchase a $25-$30 card is more than acceptable.
