Just uploaded 13 pictures of my new silver mini. I also have some with the armband. Which by the way is well made, and even has "iPod" impressed on it...nice touch apple.

You can view the pics here (http://bradperkins.typepad.com/photos/isight/).

Loading the pictures of the pink now.

Brad my man,

Not that I've ever met you, but since you are one of the select few:

1. How long is the battery life as best as you can tell? I'd be really interested in that result.
2. Can you recharge from the usb 2.0 port itself, eliminating the need for an ac adapter? One review said you could.
3. Is it really that much smaller than the 3rd gen ipod? People say it is when you hold it, but your pics lead me to believe it isn't a big difference.
4. Thanks!

Puff :>

Yes, it can charge via USB 2.0 -- the included USB 2.0 cable is not a Y-cable like the previous ones, just a single strand.

It is hard to say how much smaller it is, you kind of need to see it in person. I would say it's considerably smaller -- but it's not like half as big. Maybe two thirds in the overall weight/size, slightly more. What I would say is, it's just smaller _enough_ to make a pretty big difference.

Oops,

Brad, wanted to also ask:

How is the new scroll wheel? Better, I hope? Do the buttons physically move inward to get the play/ff/rew/menu buttons to work on the mini? Or is it just a different amount of pressure used to trigger the touch-sensitive scrollwheel?

I always hit the menu/play buttons on my 3rd gen accidentally, and I really don't like that. This would be a major factor in convincing me to get the mini. That and the prelim reports that the battery life is 9 maybe even 10 hours. I figure the way I use it, probably 8 hours, which I'm totally happy with.

Thanks

The clickwheel buttons do indeed "click," and the whole wheel slightly moves when a click is registered. It is wonderful. :)

Sorry to jump on this thread, but figured I might as well pipe in.

Pic #11 is a little pornographic. :D

I really need to get to the store and check these out in person.

Have not had enough time to use it, but since I have had since this morning after a full charge and have played maybe an hour's work of songs, played solitaire, parachute, and brick for about 45m to an hour while waiting at doctor's office for my wife's sonogram (were having another girl) the battery life is half gone. I have the backlight set to 20 Seconds and it was on the whole time when playing the games.

2. Can you recharge from the usb 2.0 port itself, eliminating the need for an ac adapter? One review said you could.

Nicky G answered that for you.

YES!!! My pics do not do it justice to me it is very much smaller. In fact, I am considering ebaying my 15GB.

4. Thanks!

Your Welcome!

The new scroll wheel is so much better. Apple would be a fool not to upgrade the new iPods to this. I had the same trouble with accidently hit the static buttons on my 15GB the new wheel is dead on.

As a side note I went by CompUSA (no Apple Store here) to see if I could score a pink one (for the wife) early, and the Apple guy said no way he could sale me one before tomorrow at 6pm. Well I pulled the mini out of my pocket and three of the employees dropped there jaw and were eating out of my hand...it was so funny. They were like how did you get so early?? The manager did let me pre-pay for it but I cannot pick it up until 6pm tomorrow night. They were no were near as strict for the iLife upgrade.

Brad, thanks for your input, and congrats on the new arrival.

So you're thinking about selling your 15 gb, huh? So I think that speaks volumes. Great to hear about the new scroll wheel, because this was a serious downgrade in the 3rd gen. I was debating about whether to hold out until the mini reaches 10 gb or so, but I can't wait that long, and in reality 750-1000 songs at a time is plenty. I think I'll try to get one at Best Buy and get an extended warranty so I'll be covered when the battery runs out in 2 years.

Thanks

Instead of starting a new thread, I thought I'd add my thoughts and pictures of my blue mini. I just got it a half an hour ago, so it's charging up right now. What can I say, other than Wow! It's amazingly light, the finish looks and feels amazing, but the thing I think I like most about it that I didn't expect to is the screen. I figured that since it was smaller, it would be harder to read. Not at all! My 15gb iPod has the backlight set to on whenever I press a button, but with my mini, I can easily hold it out at arms reach and still read everything just fine. I'm not trying to convince people to spend your money, but the mini is money well spent. My pictures definitely don't do it justice, I was so anxious to plug my mini into my computer that I didn't spend too much time with the pics. Maybe I'll update them tomorrow. Anyway, if any of you are on the fence, or if you think you don't want one, please go to an Apple store and check them out. I am going to the Apple store tomorrow just to check out all of the colors. I definitely like the blue, but I would like to see what the green and pink looks like in person. If you look at the pictures of the pink mini from pcmags review, it looks dark purple in one light, and fairly different in the next. Anyway, here's my pics! http://homepage.mac.com/mskuehnl/PhotoAlbum9.html

henleyfan:

Thanks for posting the pics of the Blue one, nice to see the other colors. I love how Apple color coded the box.

Puff:
You read my mind. I almost decided to wait until they released larger sizes, but for me the size of the mini is what the iPod needs to be. It may take a little more time on deciding on how to load it, where as before I would simply load my whole library (6.26GB) and forget about it.

henleyfan what case is on your regular iPod? I really like it :)

I never realized the mini was that small!!! wow technology is amazing!

The case on my regular iPod is the Vaja iVod black case. It goes along with the iPod perfectly, and am thrilled with the looks and protection. The apple store online has them for $50 in a few different colors.

I got a chance to play with my mini iPod a little more, and I still love it! It seemed to take a lot longer to load up songs than a regular iPod using firewire, I suppose the smaller hard drive is slower. The way I originally felt when I got my iPod is the way I feel with the mini. $249 is not a bad price I don't think, it is a superb product.

Hi everyone with a mini,

Couple more questions, if I may :>

1. I heard the mini's screen doesn't display as many characters horizontally as the regular ipod, i.e. DAVE MATTHEW BA vs DAVE MATTHEWS BAND. How many letters does it cut off? I know there is no album title.

2. What color is the backlight? Is it like the 3rd gen's?

3. Is the center button on the scroll wheel a true button, or is it touch sensitive like the 3rd gen's center select button? I was hoping for a true depressable button.

4. Are you able to use a reg ipod and a mini with the itunes simultaneously without the itunes getting all confused?

5. Does it have a 32mb buffer just like the full-sized ipods?

Exactly. I can fit Dave Matthews Band on the screen, but when I load Dave Matthews and Friends, it is only able to display Dave Matthews and ... If they song is to long it scrolls as the the 3rd Gen's. do.

2. What color is the backlight? Is it like the 3rd gen's?

[b]The Mini backlight is much more brighter than my 3rd Gen. 15GB.

3. Is the center button on the scroll wheel a true button, or is it touch sensitive like the 3rd gen's center select button? I was hoping for a true depressible button.

Yes it is a real button like the first iPod's. I think that is why I like this new scroll wheel. As you stated earlier with the 3G iPods you often hit the static buttons by mistake . That will not happen with the Mini.
The wheel is still touch sensitive, but it has a better feel. It is not as "glassy" and has more friction to it. And the diameter smaller which makes it easier to scroll around it.

4. Are you able to use a reg ipod and a mini with the itunes simultaneously without the itunes getting all confused?

Not sure my other cable is at the house. But I wll check tonight and let you know. Of course I had no trouble adding to iTunes.

5. Does it have a 32mb buffer just like the full-sized ipods?

Not sure, but Apple's Tech specs shows 25 minutes of skip protection for all models so I would assume yes.

Brad,
thanks for your help. Now the only thing that's left is to go out and buy it. I don't have any other questions other than: silver or blue?

Hehe,

I haven't seen one negative review of the mini. Not only that, all of them have been not just lukewarm but decidedly positive. This is despite a considerable pre-release "big deal" consensus from the press. I'm hoping this little gadget will help me exercise more :> Or at least look cooler while doing it :>

Puff,
I only negatives I see are the amount if space (which of course will continue to increase over time), included ear-buds (at least bundle the in-ear type), no dock (I plan on buying one or two), the included belt clip (they should include a closed case), and not displaying the Album information.

Apple should allow you to custom build the iPod contents, ie. for those that already have headphones allow people to swap the headphone for a dock.

But of course the positives (Size, Screen, Backlight, Wheel, Colors, Size ;->) out weigh the negatives. I really cannot wait to see the other colors in person.

I will post some pictures of the wife's pink one tonight. Hmmmm that sounds little dirty huh?

Hi, not a great big techie, so I know the mini recharges straight from usb 2.0 now, but can anyone confirm that it'll recharge from a laptop's usb 2.0 slot, too? That would be really cool b/c I have a laptop only and it'll cut down that much more on travel gear!

It will, just like the old one and firewire

The ipod won't recharge from my laptop's 4 pin firewire slot that most laptops come with. It will from a desktop's, though.

Just hoping someone with a laptop can tell me if it'll recharge through usb 2.0 which I'm pretty sure it will given that there's none of this 4 pin 6 pin stuff with usb

I bought my mini today, and absolutely love it. I don't think I will be using my 15gb anymore, :) My wife loved my old Ipod, but after seeing the new silver she wants to get her own pink one.

I read that unlike the regular iPod the mini will charge from both firewire and USB2 ports.

I dont know what laptop you have, but every powerbook I have owned has the regular firewire port.

It charges fine.

Well, I got one and I can verify that it does charge from the usb 2.0 port on my thinkpad t41.

I'm really happy about that b/c on road trips or wherever, it's just the mini plus the usb 2.0 cord. No power adapter needed, and of course, I won't have to worry about which part of the world I'm in either since I can always charge from my laptop!

The firewire on windows laptops is never a 6 pin (pentagon shaped). It's usually 4 pin, and firewire won't charge from a laptop as far as I know, windows laptops, that is.

So this was a fairly nice surprise for me.

As you can tell, I love the mini. I will have more to say later, but for now, I'm hanging out with it.

I have got the mini-ipod to work and charge flawlessly from a usb 1.1

I know this is debated, but it works with certain drivers and configurations
