I tried turning on my itouch and it doesnt turn on.. so I thought the battery was dead. Plugged it in and itunes says its in recovery mode. So I clicked on restore.. it downloaded an update It said preparing ipod for restore. Then is gives me an error about a min or two afterwards THE IPOD COULD NOT BE RESTORED. AN UNKNOWN ERROR OCCURRED (1604).
I tried reinstalling the itunes software and rebooting, but nothing is working. I've only had this thing for like 1 month. I never jailbreak it and never took it apart.
Any help would be appreciated..

I had the same issue when I put the new software on my touch 1.1.2. I was using a JBL speaker/doc and it would not restore. When I just used the ipod cord it restored on the first try.

I registered here just to tell you what an arrogant ### you (and people like you) are for saying that. That is about the least helpful thing that ever gets said when people ask for assistance. Do you think there is anyone left on the Internet that hasn't heard of Google? Do you honestly believe that this person has not looked around on search engines to try to find an answer to their question?
Don't bother replying to this, I'll not be back to read your replies. Just know that your kind are not helping anyone enjoy the tubes, you're simply filling them with smart-### remarks.
Have a nice day. :shake:

Wow - well, I guess you haven't paid attention to all the notes that I've posted helping people left and right. But to each his own. I'm helping people who are asking questions like "How do I sync my iPod?" - no offense, but after a while you get burned out. And thanks for registering just to rip me a new one. I'm so glad you're here to help people who have issues with their iPod Touches. You can tell me off when you actually do something beside b*tch...

I just got an iTouch and synced it to iTunes 7.6.x running on XP. After upgrading the iTouch to 1.1.4, I got the THE IPOD COULD NOT BE RESTORED. AN UNKNOWN ERROR OCCURRED (1604) message. My iTouch is new and was never jail-broken.
Here are some attempts that didn't work:
-Rebooting
-Trying the Restore option
-Holding down the power+home buttons, then releasing only the power button
After trying to restore it 3-4 times, my computer stopped recognizing the iTouch. It would show up in iTunes again only after switching USB ports.
I ended up booting to a 2nd hard drive running Vista with a fresh install of iTunes 7.6. The iTouch was recognized and I was asked to download the 1.1.4 update. This time it worked. Not sure which of the following was the solution:
-Fresh install of iTunes
-Different user profile / computer
-Using Vista Ultimatum instead of XP
Hope this helps.

What an a$$hole. Obvisioly they didn't google it or they would have found that page. Do you think before you throw a fit? Why not just stfu, and I'm, along with everyone else I'm sure, are glad your not returning.
PS: Im not targeting anyone that posted the question, I'm targeting the jacka$$ that made that stupid post.

I had the same thing and tried everything. Then I thought it could be Norton Internet Security that was causing the problem, so I disabled it (after switching off my wireless access point). Tried to restore again and it worked first time! Hope this works for you.

I had the same 1604. I tried everything from iLiberty, ibrickr, ziphone, reinstalling Itunes, using 3 different computers with 3 different operating systems, etc. I finally asked myself why am I wasting so much time. My iPod wasted jailbroke. I took it to my local Apple store last night and the guy tried a simple restore once, and gave up. He ordered me a new Ipod and it was delivered today. I picked it up and I'm back in business.
