(I'm definitely not trying to rub two platforms together to make sparks...I'm just geeked over the ad's execution...)

First I've seen this one; love the technique. Opened the NYTimes.com front page; after years of conditioning, I didn't even look at the top banner ad. But my eye was caught by Mac and PC standing together in a video frame on the right side of the page above the fold. I clicked the button to play viddy with sound....

PC is looking to inject a little sizzle into Vista usage/sales; he slaps a giant red button hanging from the end of a thick cable....and the banner ad atop the page lights up like a marquee! (But instead of lighting the entire message -- "Don't Give Up On Vista" -- only Give Up illuminates; PC notes the error and hits the button again...and again...the best the sign can do is flash Give Up...On Vista...Give Up...On Vista...)

What a treat to see the two separate ad spaces combine into one scene, using the page as a stage to move the "action" across...so much better than the standard static-position billboards that usually dot the info super hiway.

Watching this spot was like getting a little gift from the ad agency's web heads. Thanx!

I went there but it doesn't seem to work with Firefox... I'm going to try Safari.

[EDIT] The top part of the advert never even loaded in Firefox...

Using Safari, I really liked the ad.

I thought this ad was really well done as well. It was funny and a lot different than others, typical of Apple's marketing which is very appealing.

Thing is, and I don't want to sound negative. But is it at all possible for Microsoft to take legal action against Apple due to the continued (and true) slagging of Vista? With PC's its different since HP, Dell, MDG, Acer etc make them so its not targeting a company. But Apple continuously uses Vista which leads me to believe MS could sue them. There have been lawsuits on much less.

There have been lawsuits on much less.

But not successful lawsuits ;-) Not sure, really, what you're concerned about...Apple's just doing a normal (toned down, actually) product comparison. No false claims are being made -- are some Windows folks seeking out XP instead of Vista? Yup. Can it be confusing knowing what hardware will or won't run certain Vista features? Yup.

Apple's not making stuff up (they reserve that behavior for their own products ;-)...not saying "Vista reduces your sperm count" or "Putting Vista in your PC is like putting sugar in your gas tank."

Not nearly as funny as the first one, but still makes incredible use of page space. This time, the page-wide top banner proclaims "Leopard is better and easier to use than Vista" (quoted from a WSJ review), while the sidebar space below the banner has PC climbing a ladder, complaining about the obvious "blunder."

Once up the ladder, PC staples a sheet of paper onto the banner, adding the word NOT to the quote. PC then prompts Mac to follow him: "C'mon Mac, we've got the whole internet to correct; grab the ladder."

The integration of the banner and sidebar are amazing.... PC moves between the two frames seamlessly, for a great effect.

(LOL -- if you're not using Leopard on a Mac, the ad will display best in Firefox, not Safari ;-)

Hahaha.. yeah, wonderful for the fanboys. It's actually somewhat clever but more childish and pompous than any other ad campaign I've ever seen. Actually, all the recent apple ads scream of posturing and immaturity. Do you see anyone else doing caricatures of their competition, naming them and making the caricatures overweight inept idiots? Imagine if your coworker, who was gunning for the same promotion as you, suddenly brought in his friend to do an impersonation of you that was less than flattering so your coworkers and bosses could laugh along with him. It's basically the same thing. It's childish. Way to go apple, now you can throw class out the door. Steve Jobs... what a self-absorbed jackhole. Everyone know what a jerk he is, and now the ads can show what a "jerk" "apple" is.

Well, at least you don't let it affect you personally ;-)

So I watched some football tonight...here are the mocking ads I saw:
Pizza Hut
Southwest Air
Wendys
Comcast
Alltel
Subway
H&R Block
Miller Lite

Only Alltel "names names," since the digs are factual; the others leave competitors unnamed, since the claims are comparative...but we all know who's being talked about. P'bly doesn't matter though; you're enjoying your anger buzz ;-)

Who said I was angry? That's just how I feel about the ads. I actually explained my position quite verbosely. As for the Steve Jobs is a jackhole remark, you can read numerous columns and articles about him by googling his name. It's a well known fact that he is a prima donna. Rightfully so since he did bring apple back from the dead. His ego shows through this marketing campaign and through his most loyal fans. Notice I said fans instead of customers, not that his fans aren't customers.

I think apple's ads are trying to be childish, simple and easy to follow for the kind of people who watch the super bowl :D
People need to see the reasons apple beats windows in a calm, low amount of thinking way without throwing computer terms at them.

You don't need to tell me about Jobs, I read his biography and know all about what he did to his daughter Lisa. The one he refused to admit he fathered. Not very nice, but then again, most suits aren't.

I agree though that these ads are getting tiresome now and he won't stop ripping into Vista. That's a very poor thing to do, especially since 90% of the marketshare uses it.

Gizmodo had this banner up last time I checked and while done well, the part about "cleaning up the rest of the internet" wasn't very nice. I'm going to have to agree JMG that now that they've come on top in certain markets, they're getting too cocky.

They're doing it again! These are just wonderful ads -- two distinct areas of the page, talking to each other. It's such an obvious concept, but not used all that often...wonder why? Is it just the increased cost (buying two banner slots instead of one), or is it also tricky for the ad servers to deliver both files in time (and, given how woefully slow DoubleClick and the like have been lately, I wouldn't be surprised)?

Checek it out on the front page of today's New York Times (http://nytimes.com/).

Apple ads make me smile. Some days it's hard to believe that the in your face insults haven't gotten them into more trouble yet.

Churro? I think not.

Another wonderful "multi-pane" ad on today's front page of New York Times (http://nytimes.com/). This one has a cloud of iPhone apps up in the banner, and an iPhone in the sidebar -- the apps go flying from the banner into the iPhone, leaving the legend, "One billion downloads. Only on the App Store."

It's not as seamless as the previous ads, but it's still yards ahead of what anyone else is doing....
