There has been a lot of speculation about whether or not an exo3 for a 10/15/20 GB iPod will work with a 30/40 GB dock cover. Unfortunatly, the answer is no.
I just received my exo3 in the mail, so I hurried to find the 30/40 GB dock cover that came with my dock. After a few minutes of trying to get the old dock cover off, I tried out the exo3 with the larger cover. It does fit in the opening (much better than it does with the small dock cover), but because of the position of the connector, it still doesn't seat well enough to fully connect. If the connector was a fraction further to the rear of the opening, it may have worked. When seated in the dock, there is a small gap between the back of the iPod and the and the dock opening, while the iPod with the exo3 is squeezed towards the front of the dock...causing the exo3 to "bunch up" in the front.
I am convinced that if the exo3'd iPod were able to seat in the center of the dock covers opening, it would probably work. Since I don't use the 30/40 GB dock cover, I may take a dremel tool and file away a little off of the front of the opening, and maybe some off of the sides to try and make it fit the exo3. I'll let you know how it turns out, if I have time ;)
Also, I apologize for the lack of pictures. I should be getting my digital camera back from the shop in a week or so...maybe then I'll switch dock covers again and take some pictures for you to look at.
