I was able to spend Thanksgiving with a friend who has an iPhone. He has a wireless internet router for his laptop ect. His iPhone is compatable with it..

I unfortunately live in a small town where AT&T service is not found.

We don't get iPhones until late 2009.

So...for Christmas I want an IPod touch...really badly

The nearest wifi hotspot, is 9 miles away from my town...I have a wireless internet router though...for my laptop ect. WILL the ITouch work with just a wireless internet?

Secondly...when traveling around...say through rural areas *Between Wyoming and Colorado* will I have ANY internet service?

I just wondered because it's probably not like the iPhone....

You should have service fine from your wireless router at home. Unless of course you use some of the extra secure security protocols. Most people find it works fine with their home routers.

In the great wide open however you're not going to be getting reception. Maybe the random hotel or McDonalds with wireless. Sorry :(

I honestly feel iLounge really ought to put up a sticky in this forum about the difference between a wifi hotspot and the mobile web. I'm finding a surprising amount of other people that really don't know the difference. I also find it really surprising that people with wireless wifi don't know that their wifi is really no different than a hotspot.. The only difference is in a public hotspot you may be greeted by a page before you can surf.

I feel this is important to Iloungers in this forum because they need to know iPhones are the mobile web (and WIFI) device (provided you stick with the data plan) and that the Ipod Touch is the WIFI only device.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink....

You can leave the suggestion for such an article in our feedback area of the forums. One of our contributors might take it up to further educate the public. Of course the average user looking for this information would still come to the forums to ask and be confused before they would read an article... Or a sticky.

I agree Stu, in most forums, not only here, you will find the most posted topics are already stickies. Most people don't even look at them let alone even try the search function. So we, as well as others, will be patient and continue to help others out here, even if it's been covered many times.

You guys make really good points. I'll probably leave feedback as Stu suggested anyway. Even if the other users don't read it, at least we have something to point them to when this question gets asked again. Just a thought.
