View Full Version : Worth $400?

Is the Touch really worth the $400 it costs for the 16gb?

I've heard bad things about freezing, dead pixels, bad battery life, scratching, smudging, low memory, expensive, etc....

I really want an iPod Touch, but i'm afraid that because of all these problems, a new Touch will come out REALLY SOON, and i'll be stuck with the old model....

Some people are saying that the battery isn't even lasting 5 hours...

I currently have an iPod Mini (4gb) that still gets 10+ hours battery life... and i'm afraid that the touch is a bad purchase....

would i be better off just saving $$ and getting the 80gb Classic?

No - touch is NOT a bad purchase. Heres the thing:

1) Turning the device completely off isntead of leaving it in sleep mode drains the battery significantly. I bet ignorant people do this.

2) Leaving wi-fi on and putting the device in sleep mode drains the battery even more, because it is constantly connected to a network. Ignorant people do this as well.

Because of thoese 2 things, people say battery life is bad. It's not, really.

Smudges, scratches, etc, buy a case. Problem solved.

Now for the question as to why touch instead of classic - the following is a copy/paste of what I just answered on another thread:
Come on, for 5 generations now, you've had to deal with a circle and a button the middle. And a regular screen dimension. Its time for a change - time for a bigger screen, time for wi-fi, time for sliding (instead of spinning) - time for touch!

those are all my woes too. but glass only scratches with diamond or sand.
put a screen protector on with iclear and your fine.
smudging? its an ipod. that was obvious. but just remember the classic can hold more, and the battery will also live longer. your choice though.
either is a good purchase

Well I have both a classic(160gb) and a 16gb touch. The touch never leaves my side. As a matter of fact I'm sitting at my PC right now, yet I'm typing this on my touch. Go figure!

haha nice one Paula.
yeah, i'll most likely do the same thing.
the touch is just so fun!

It doesn't matter if the classic's interface is dinosaur or not will still be the iPod of choice for those who need to hold massive amounts of music/video.

At least with the wheel you don't have to take it out of your pocket.

Just to clarify - it does NOT matter if you have the Wi-Fi on when you put your iPod Touch to sleep. The iPod Touch automatically turns OFF the Wi-Fi within approximately 30 seconds of being put to sleep.

Don't believe me? Test it yourself - all you have to do is ping your iPod Touch (e.g., use the ping command from either the command line or through an application). Your iPod Touch will respond when on and respond for approximately 30 seconds and then stop responding.

That's also why if you wake, quickly unlock your iPod Touch, and open Safari (very very quickly mind you), you'll get a server not available message - it's because the Wi-Fi hasn't had time to connect yet.

In regards to the battery life, I find it very good -- I'm listening to music about 4 hours a day, another 1 hour or so watching video, and surfing the web 2+ hours a day and then charging overnight. Using Wi-Fi to surf, however, is the greatest battery drain - more so than video!

Yeah, i'll be charging every night...

And about the cases...

I don't know if i want a bulky case that will take away from its beauty haha.

would you go for a slip case or a permanent case? (ie take out to use or use while its on)

so is the iClear a good bet?

If you are going to be using the iPod in your car, I would say get the Classic. With the Classic you don't need to look at it and slide your finger across the screen to turn it on. With the Classic, you don't even need to look at it to press pause, unpause, skip to the next song and even turn up the volume.

Then there is the disk space. I have an 8GB iPhone and I can fit 1500 songs on it and about 10 music videos and about 80 photos. That leaves about 100MB of space.

With my Classic, I have 6500 songs, 78 TV show episodes, most of them one hour shows, 6 DVD movies ripped on to it, 10 music videos and I still have 80GB left.

If you don't want a bulky case, the Invisible Shields are great. They'll protect it from scratching, although not from a big drop.

yeah, i wouldn't drop it...
but i will scratch it

Freezing? None so far. I've had some music stop playing but I think that was due to inactivity rather than freezing.

Dead pixels? None so far. Screen is gorgeous.

Bad battery life? Compared to the iPod Classic? Yea. But I put my iPod Touch under heavy wi-fi use so that's expected.

Scratching? None so far. I'm concerned as well and am looking for a screen protector as we speak.

Smudging? Yea it happens. Then again, it is called the iPod Touch. Touching and smearing go hand in hand. Simple fix = wipe it down with the cloth Apple provides.

Low Memory? I'm not an advanced user so no hacking/jailbreaking/extraneous application use for me. In which case, memory hasn't even entered into my mind as a potential problem.

Expensive? For 16 GB? Yea. But my music library is only 2 GB large anyway. And I love the way the device looks. And I love the touch controls. And I've been waiting to get my hands on an item like this since the iPhone came out (I refuse to switch to AT&T)

So all in all, it's a great bargain to me. I wouldn't be worried about springing for a purchase now. It was just newly introduced so I don't foresee a big change soon. And hey, it's an Apple product anyway. 1-2 years from now, there'll be something much nicer and much fancier out anyway. Can't wait forever. :P

How long will the battery last JUST listening to music, but with the occasional browsing through songs and picking new stuff?

Ypu mean ACTUALLY TURNING IT COMPLETELY OFF drains the battery???? This don't make sense. Surely putting any device in a 'sleep' mode for long periods of time just drains the damn things? Think of laptops. Using the hibernate function for extended periods of time is just a sure-fire way of killing the battery life way before it's time.

Hope it's just a type-o what you're saying!

I love mine but now I'm starting to regret having it.

- Only 16 gigs
- No remote (yet?)
- Can't input data onto Calendar through the Touch

Everyone now is waiting for the 2nd gen with more storage. Perhaps 32/64 gigs.

The last firmware update added the ability to input events to the calendar.

Actually, what he wrote is not a typo. Now, I don't suggest leaving it in sleep for weeks at a time obviously because it will drain although very slowly... But the startup routine draws a significant amount of battery - more than just leaving it asleep for even a day. You have to realize this is a Flash based device and ENTIRELY different from a laptop - talking apples & oranges here...

And you can read more about the batteries at http://www.apple.com/batteries/

Yes, it's worth $400. You really have to ask yourself if you want to spend $400 on a media device, but if the answer is yes, the iPod Touch is definitely worth it.

I donno if i should wait six months and get an iPod Touch 1.5 Gen with a few changes and cheaper price

I don't believe it's going to get any cheaper than $300/$400. Apple will most likely add more features & larger memory. Hopefully 32/64 gigs.

i agree with exactly what he said, except for number one
you turn the ipod off when you are going to leave it off for a long amount of time, like weeks or days ~ i did this once because my mom took it away
you put the ipod on sleep mode when you only want it off for a short amount of time

Bad behavior huh? jk jk ;)

I turn mine off daily and haven't noticed any adverse effects to battery life.

I pretty much can't use it from 5AM to 5PM (job bans electronic devices that can send data)
