my wife's pda died, and we're not due any time soon for a new phone, so I can't get her a Treo/smartphone, etc. I'm looking to replace it and wondered if the iphone/ipod touch have any way of storing documents/notes. One of her main uses for the pda was an extensive recipe library, sorted by categories on her old sony clie.

I don't see much on the apple website about built in apps, I'm guessing because there aren't any.

Is there any way to carry around any type of document files (pdf, doc, txt, rtf)? It doesn't have to sync- we just need to get them on the thing.

If you jailbreak the iPod Touch, you have some options. There is a program called Ebooks (http://iphoneebooks.googlecode.com/) that allows you to organize TXT or HTML files on your iPod Touch. It works pretty well, although its best if you break them into chapters (big files bog it down a lot). There's also a program PDFViewer that (obviously) allows you to view PDFs (although it's currently in alpha).

Funny thing is, Safari & Mail built-in can read TXT, DOC, PDF files. So, I've actually sent myself the iLounge iPod/iPhone Buyers Guide PDF in an email, and when I want to view it, I just open up the email.

So, in summary - there are ways...
