Hackers have demonstrated that audio line-in DOES work on the 'touch. It's just a matter of modifying the 32-pin dock connector to hook up with the already active line-in circuitry.

With the right connector and software, VOIP is possible, as is voice recording on the 'touch.

I honestly didn't expect the 'touch to advance this far in the first three months. So what's the chance that we'll see either of those functions on the 'touch in the next 3-6 months?

People had discovered audio in for the previous iPods for a while before the audio/mics were released for them. It still may be a while.

In addition, the audio-in could be legacy from the iPhone or something due to the hurried development cycle (just like all the legacy Bluetooth files without any hardware). It wouldn't be the first time. The original Bondi Blue iMac had a slot called the mezzanine slot that was left-over from the development cycle. Later revisions removed the slot.

yes, but the hackers with jailbroken 'touches and Voice Notes have actually recorded voice on their 'touches. So it's not just legacy files. It's just a matter of attaching the right dock connector, adding Voice Notes or some other recording app, and away you go.

I know that - what I'm saying is don't expect third-party companies to be designing and making products that will use the line-in until such time as Apple tells them or the products have been released ongoing with the lines active for a while. I'd be surprised if any company is going to want to spend the time and money to design, test, manufacture and ship a product that Apple might obsolete in a heartbeat - many were burned by the mezzanine slot.

But I'm sure there will be plenty of hacks out there on how to do it yourselves. Just like all those Altoid charging tins - there's always someone...
