3. what are the good things about the ipod touch

5. i'm thinking of jailbreakeing it if i get it but not immediately incase it breaks. is it worth doing this? whats so good about jailbreaking?
6. i currently have a 1st gen 4gb nano. is it worth upgrading to the touch?
7: will ipod touches from the US/America work perfectly in the uk?
8: can u post cheap links to buy the ipod touch. need by xmas
9. can u give me examples of apps and emulators and stuff i can get on the ipod touch
10. can i change my wallpaper when i get the touch or does it need to be jailbroken.
11. will my ipod nano 1st gen plug charger work with the touch?
12. i also want to make up an iTunes account for free without registering credit card details so i can create an iMix and get album artwork. is this possible? if yes how do i make a free account?

1. Yes.
2. Yes. I'm 51 and I find the 'keyboard' fine to use.
3. Web browser, wi-fi, large clear screen.
4. Lack of some apps on the iPhone (see 5 for solution)
5. Jailbreaking allows the installation of such apps as Mail, Maps, Notes, Weather (all standard on iPhone), games, customise icons/backgrounds - If I can manage to jailbreak my touch I'm sure you will be able to. If you decide to un-jailbreak it you just restore the iPod. Jailbreak will be gone. What's good about jailbreaking? You can add games or apps that you want to add.
6. Sounds like you would be an ideal candidate for upgrading as you will have almost 4 times the storage capacity if you go for the 16GB.

the touch also has the itunes store, and worse battery life than the current nano which starts off at 150 compared to 300

7. Yes, a US touch will work in UK.
8. Doubt if you will find anywhere that sells the touch anymore than a couple of £/$ cheaper than Apple.
Of course many places might advertise "cheap iPods " but I would not send money their way...

9. Well, first you can get all the iPhone apps (Mail, Weather, Stocks, Maps, etc.). Plus there's several game emulators (NES & Gameboy Advanced). There are web servers (Apache, etc.). There are development languages (PHP, etc.). There are iPod games (iSnake, iSolitaire, etc.). There are network tools (VNC, IM, etc.). There are productivity tools (Ebook readers, PDF viewers, etc.). There is actually quite a few tools out there already and as soon as the SDK get released in February, I expect a lot more.

10. The wallpaper behind the icons requires a jailbreak. Your wallpaper when you wake from sleep, does not.

11. Seems pretty hit or miss - some do some don't. You should check with the manufacturer to find out.

12. No clue - sorry...

thanks, i will think up a few more questions.
EDIT
13. what is a SDK and SSH?

13. An SDK is a Software Development Kit - it's the software tool kit used by developers to create applications. SSH is Secure SHell which lets you run commands on the iPod Touch from your Mac or PC.

Not to hijack this thread, but I have newbie questions that may also help the OP.

1. How much available memory does a 16GB iPod touch come with (i.e., how much is leftover after OS, apps)?

2. Are there good options for remote charging/powering of the unit (i.e., how to handle long flights)?

3. I have a WEP (or something) secured wireless network in my house - can I enter in the appropriate security codes to use my own wifi when at home?

There's 14.x GB available on a 16GB iPod touch. I don't know the exact number.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean with the second question, but just about any iPod Dock Connector-based charger will charge it, and you can of course turn it off.

iPod touch supports WEP and WPA encryption, so go ahead.

Very good. Thank you.

Regarding my 2nd question - I was referring to a battery pack that I could use to power/recharge when outlets weren't available.

Something like this:

I guess my question is, which is the best one?

Griffin makes one that you use 4 AAA batteries in, they claim 14 more hours of music or 2 more hours of video. Advantage would be if no where near an outlet can carry more batteries. The other one I recently seen was a APC claiming 55 hours of recharable power for your Ipod. I will have to find the add/link but it was 70 bucks so a bit more then the Griffin model but rechargable and 4x the battery life. Found the APC one on Ebay..

http://cgi.ebay.com/APC-Universal-Mobile-Device-Battery-works-with-IPOD_W0QQitemZ200147321379QQcmdZViewItem This one will take any USB plug so more of a universal charger/backup.

I have been looking into the APC one but have not used either yet. Good Luck.
