USB help

I usually use my 3Gen 40 Gig iPod with my firewire card on my laptop, but I just bought another dock connector with USB so it won't drain my battery when I'm organizing my tunes. When I plug the USB cord into the port, my iPod turns on, but it doesn't connect to my computer. Can anybody help?

Oh, and I have USB2.

Have you tried any other USB devices to make sure that the controller is working correctly?
