I just bought myself a Maxtor 1-Touch external hard drive to back up the critical files on my computer. I can list all the directories I want backed up and by pressing "one button" all changes to those directories are backed up. So, I need to know the file and/or directory where the iPod library database is so I can set up my one-touch to back up that directory.

Note, I already have it set up to save my MP3 files database (I don't use AAC) ... what I don't want to lose are all the playlists (about 150) in iTunes.

Yes, I know I can manually export the playlist to a directory and then back up that diretory. But I'd rather not have to go through that pain. I'd rather just save the entire iPod database file and then restore it if my computer ever craps out.

Anyone know which file is the database file and where it is stored?

Thanks

if you left it all default

and you have xp, it should be in my docs>my music>itunes... if I remember correctly...

Thanks, well there is a file called

iTunes Music Library.xml

in that directory. Is that it? I'm surprised that it's an XML file ... but if that's it, that's terrific thanks!

More important is the "iTunes 4 Music Library.itl" file. But you want both the XML and the .itl file backed up.
