so i'm really new to iPod, and need some help. i currently run windows XP, and have the a 10gb iPod w/ the firewire/usb 2.0 dock. when i try and update my iPod w/ new songs i ripped to iTunes, the iPod is recognized and iTunes says "updating iPod, do not disconnect". my computer then freezes for 10-15 seconds, and then shuts down iTunes. on top of that, my iPod continues to say "do not disconnect"...the only way i can disconnect it is to shut down the computer. please please help me as i have a 7 hour(each way) bus ride ahead of me this weekend, and need these new songs to get me through. please post here, or email me off the list at rocksoffphl@hotmail.com. thanks for you help!!

Heh, I had the exact same problem and I had a post about it but it was lost when this site had a database crash last week.

Anyways, when I first tried my iPod it kept saying that too, I was really frustrated because I had to catch the bus to go to school -- so I left it on all day while I was at school hoping the message would be gone when I got home.

Well, it wasn't. So I called the apple support line (you get 90 days free phone support) and the problem was the software that I installed was not updated, even though I just ordered it off their website that week.

This is what you need to do:
1. DO NOT DISCONNECT THE IPOD.
2. Close iTunes.
3. Go to Programs in Windows, then find "iPod", then "System Software 2.1" (may be a little different), then "iPod".
4. Then click update on the updater.
5. Reopen iTunes.
6. Name your iPod and go on with the registry process (takes no more than 30 seconds),
7. You should now see your iPod in the source frame in iTunes (the left panel)

If this isn't the same problem that I had then try calling the apple support (http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html) or their knowledge base.

Reply back to this thread to let us know if this worked out.

this soultion worked like a charm. 2 other things i learned was:

(1) when running Windows, don't attempt to copy your whole song list to you iPod all at once...take the time to upload 1 album at a time, it is quicker than it sounds

(2) this may sound childish, but when you are done updating and the "do not disconnect" symbol is still on your face, make sure to right-click on the iPod in your source tray, and your iPod itself will be removable.

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!!!!

iPod Forever!!
