i have a sony vaio rx-406,it has an i link ,can i use for an ipod?

I think so. I'm pretty sure that iLink and FireWire are just company brandnames for the IEEE 1394 cable. Easier to call it a cool name like iLink than to have everyone try and remember IEEE 1384 huh.

Edit: I'm not sure if your iLink will be the right size, because they come in 4 pin and 6 pin sizes, so can't help you there, but apple ships the iPod with a 4pin adapter. I don't think you can charge through a 4pin port though.

Yep, iLink = firewire = IEE 1394. I have a Sony Vaio desktop with iLink and use it with my iPod every day.
Oh yeah, on my Vaio, it has firewire (iLink) ports on the front panel as well as on the back. The ones on the front are only 4-pin and thus do not provide power and thus won't charge your iPod. The firewire ports on the back of my PC are powered 6-pin and thus will charge the iPod.
