View Full Version : UK: Can an iphone bought in the US be used for O2 in UK

If I buy a phone in the apple store in new york.
bring it to the uk.
and try to activate it with a new o2 contract here, will it work.

any opinions ?
anyone trying this after 6:02pm today :)

I would think the answer is yes as all iPhones for different countries are running the same firmware 1.1.2 and use the same hardware (GSM with Edge).

The only thing I think you would have to do is obtain an O2 sim for activation of the iPhone as the US version will come with an AT&T sim.

I know for sure u can't do that unless u buy your phone somewhere else in us from diferent provider than ATT or Apple store, but ofcourse be ready to pay the markup.. and I know they are selling them blocked and un blocked.. for about plus-minus 500 $ a peace!!!

As long as the phone is firmware 1.1.2 then all you need is an O2 SIM and you can activate it normally through iTunes.

Of course I am not sure if the EDGE/ Visual Voicemail settings would work ...? but it will accept the O2 SIM and iTunes will connect to O2 to activate.

If the firmware is 1.1.1 then you can upgrade to 1.1.2 and then use the O2 SIM.
