I upgraded to 2.1 (i thought before that only iPods with docks could, but really it just meant "dockable") and it's the best thing ever! lol. The music quiz is really fun, and theres a lot of small improvements that are cool; but what is really great is the sound improvement. It's 200 percent better, sounds CD Quality now. I'm listening to all my albums again just cause they sound so much better. What does everyone else think about 2.1?

Most people like 2.1. I think the main problem people report is the battery meter is very erratic with this version. So, don't count on the battery meter to be correct. Often times it will only show a partial charge even right after you just fully charged it. So, just beware of this.

also i know many many people hate the fact that the "ok to disconnect" screen shows when you're on your computer with the dock. this doesn't allow people to play music while hooked up to the comp.

Hello everyone!

First: Thanks for all the great info everyone provides here at the "Lounge".

second: I just connected a 15GB iPod via firewire on my SB Audigy gamer sound card to my windoze 98SE Dell. I followed the instructions read from this forum and all went well. :)

Questions: I get the "do not disconnect warning when connected to my PC. My iPod shows a constant state of battery charging. I take it this is a bug? Is it?

What software works well with the ipod. I can't use the latest version of musicmatch anymore because I can't download the plugin,(Win200/XP only), and I've checked the software compendum here at the lounge but there's not much info there other than a description of the various software titles.

I'm wondering really what works if I can't use itunes?

thanks again for all the great info here at "the lounge"

I'm not sure, but you may be able to download the full version of MMJB for iPod here (http://wwws.musicmatch.com/faq/IPOD038.htm).

Thanks but I can't open the plugin for the iPod. When I do I get the only works with Win200/XP warning.

I'm running win98SE.

Perhaps you should try XPlay (http://www.mediafour.com/products/xplay/). It indicates it works with Win98SE.

Also, about the battery charging. The iPod charges on a timer. I think it's 4 hours. Whenever you connect your iPod to power, it will start charging and continue showing the "charging" graphic for the entire 4 hours. It will do this even if the iPod is already fully charged.

Wouldn't this lead to overcharging the battery? If so, then wouldn't the battery life get seriously reduced?

Cheers,

The battery stops accepting the charge once it is fully charged.

Sorry about the potentially obvious question, but I was wondering two things about the iPod I just ordered from apple.com this morning:

1. will it come pre-installed with 2.1?
2. if not, how can I upgrade? (probably a thread out there that I couldn't find :o )

thanks in advance!

it should most definitely come with 2.1, as I bought mine in December from Best Buy and I never had to upgrade. I hope this helps.

If, for some reason, it doesn't have 2.1, you can download it from Apple's website right here (http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/).
