View Full Version : No need to sync videos (if you have a webserver)

Hello,
I've read the review of the new iPod/iPhone Apple AV Cables by Jeremy Horwitz:

and I have a burning question:

Does the video out stuff work for the YouTube application, or, more importantly I think, with Safari, if the Safari QuickTime player is playing a movie?

The reason I ask is I've discovered I never need to sync any movies to my iPhone, but I can still watch movies with my iPhone (so long as I have wifi connection).

I have a web server with directory listing turned on, and a folder in www with all my movies. Using Safari on the iPhone, I can watch those movies by navigating to their location on the web server.

Its not perfect... when you first load a movie like this, it may give an error, like server not respinding, hit OK, it goes back to a safari page with a little play symbol in the lower right, press that, and the player comes up, and it starts usually just playing the audio of the movie, showing a white background with QuickTime symbol, so I hit "Done" in the upper left, it goes back to Safari page with the little play symbol in the lower right, which I hit again, and the movie loads up (eventually... takes 20 secs or so) as if it were playing locally from the iPhone.

As long as the connection is strong and fast, it works great (excusing the slight pain getting it to start). And no need to waste time syncing. Also, the movies have to have a .mp4 or .mov suffix – this may be the apache webserver, but .m4v suffixes don't stream (as well or always). Well, technically, its not streaming, there is no streaming server running... its regular ol' Apache 1.33 w/ directory listing turned on, that's all... no "hinting" on these movies.

But also it does things I don't expect... like play a xvid wrapped mp4 just fine on the iPhone... I didn't think it could do that!!

I need help exploring this functionality... When playing a video, does Safari work with the video out functions with the Apple AV cables?

TIA
