View Full Version : iPhone got stolen...

So my iPhone got stolen out of my locker at school today (I'm a junior) and I can't think of what to do, other than just getting a free phone. Will there be an early termination fee if I do this? I already reported it, just in case, but I'm never going to see it again. Any suggestions? And buying a new one is out of the question.

You can try reporting it stolen to AT&T and Apple, and give them the IMEI number. It can be tracked.. whether or not they'll do anything, not sure, but it's worth a shot.
Lesson learned eh? Next time don't leave anything valuable in your locker!!

I was in PE class.... Kinda hard to carry around an iphone when you're playing football/working out.
Yeah, lesson learned, but that isn't really the best thing to say to someone who had this happen to 'em is it?

Ah, gym eh... yeah, guess you can't really keep your phone with you...
haha.. i know it's not something you want to hear when that's happened..... sorry, couldn't help myself...
dunno if this is something you wanna do, but if you can memorize your imei number (should be on the box), which is something you can check quickly on the back of the phone, if you happen to see someone walkin around using it, find a clever way of getting them to let you see it. quickly check that imei number, and if its the exact same as yours, dont give it back. just dont get shot over it.... or, you can report them if you wanna snitch... but that might get you into even more trouble than just keeping it and calling them on it.

Yeah, I've already memorized it just in case, but realistically, I'm never seeing it again.
Whatever..... Just wasn't meant to be I guess. Thank you anyway.

Sorry to hear that.
I would follow kloan's advice and let AT&T and/or Apple know... that would be your best bet at something happening.

When I was in school, there was no such thing as a phone you could take to class with you. In a lot of ways, it was better then.

Yeah, I had a job until very recently, and I saved all my money after buying the iPhone to pay the bill, at least until my birthday, when I'll get some money, and then shortly after that my job starts back up.
I'm really lucky to have the job I do. I'll be paying a lot less a month now though, as I just got a free AT&T phone.
Oh well.....

So, i'm also a junior. Today is Wednesday, Monday i got my phone stolen out of my purse. It was a complete disaster, i even offered people one-hundred dollars to return it to me. One reason is its around christmas so, its would already be expensive, due to gift expenses. Also i dont have insurance and would have to pay the retail price. i have no idea what im going to do. it sucks, i feel yah.

The telecomm industry is just a bunch of crooks. It's ez enuff to track IMEIs but NOOOooooooo. I blame it on the politicians too, ez enuff to pass a law requiring carriers to lock an IMEI when reported lost. If everybody knew that then it doesn't do them any good to take your phone, it would be a brick to them.

I'm a sophomore and I leave my iPhone 3G in my locker everyday while I'm in P.E. because I can't carry it with me. How did the steal it? Did you accidentally leave your locker open?

Get THIS LOCK (http://store.uhaul.com/Locks/Moving/U-Fortify_Heavy_Duty_Disc_Padlock_2-3_4_).
I don't work for uhaul but I love this lock, has a shape that makes extremely difficult for a lock cutter to get around. They almost will have to destroy the locker to get inside.

I have insurance on mine through state farm. Not sure if you need another policy to insure it cause I have renters and auto through them also. $30 a year covers theft and damage and no deductible.

Ha. We aren't even allowed cells in the school. A good thing all around, in my opinion. Wouldn't use them much. Though it doesn't stop around half the school getting theirs.
I wouldn't get mine though. iPhone = expensive, valuable, and indisposeable. Would worry about it getting hit, even if it's in my pocket, by my classmates' all around childishness. Let's keep it at that.
I'd much less get it on a day with gym, where I'd have to put it in my locker. No one has a spare key, not even the school, and few people here know how to pick a lock, and in fact, I think it's perfectly safe, but I wouldn't do it anyway. Just 'cause. Not unless I really need it, which is exceedingly rare.
The biggest problem is when going to a sports club :D Have to have a phone with me. This was never a problem back when my phone was pretty much worthless, as people would take one look at it and run away, (and I wouldn't even care if it was taken anyways) but getting an iPhone complicates everything. Can't keep it in my bag, definitely unsafe, even more if I'm swimming. So what do I do? Well it hasn't happened yet, but I'm thinking I'd take my old phone. I'd really rather not though, anyone with any ideas on how to do this? :D

I feel for ya man, that really sucks. When I was in high school I borrowed my girlfriend's promise ring that I had given her (don't ask, it was a lovey dovey thing) and I hung it on the hook in the locker. Forgot it, and lo and behold a week later she saw a girl wearing it on her finger and confronted her right then and there. As it turns out, the guy that found it in the locker gave it to his girlfriend. It was a pain to get it back, but we eventually did.
Never say never my friend.

Not true. I bought my iphone 2 days ago from Best Buy and I pay $15 a month for insurance. At any time it breaks/shatters/anything wrong with it they give me a brand new one.
Of course I didn't read all of the replies pretty much telling you what an idiot you are before posting this.

I doubt they'd give you a new one if you damage it, whether purposely or not.
And there's no need to call people idiots, especially when others could just as easily turn the same word on you.

With this said, people have have mentioned already their insurance plans with Best Buy and even State Farm (even though I don't think $30 a month is worth it).
Personally I agree with bob-mini and I think if AT&T gets some proof that a phone has been stolen it would lock it up. On top of that I think a notification should be sent to Apple and let them disable the iPhone from being unlocked/restored. (They have a kill switch, maybe they can do this too :P ) Especially since when you try to connect to iTunes it shows the serial number of the iPhone.

They already have an application like that, I can't recall the name off the top of my head but it runs in the background and provides cord's of your iPhone that can be tracked on their website. I believe it was a free one too

The $30 a year is no deductible and it is for my iPhone specifically by name and serial number. I had to get them a copy of my reciept and it is insured for $600, full retail.

Maybe you should go back to just spectating since you're not helping anything.
Doing a quick iTunes search I've found a couple applications that I've mentioned above, I've named just two.

I guess you're an idiot yourself because you didn't even bother to find out about the Best Buy insurance before you posted that. They will give you a new iPhone 3G every time you break it, as long as you pay the $15 a month for their insurance. Please get informed about something before you speak out about it.

The impatience level with some of you guys is ridiculous.
*chooses to ignore 5th word in post*
I didn't read the Best Buy insurance policy, and don't have time to right now, I'll get around to it later.
But you're telling me that BestBuy is giving you the option to pay $15 for a month or two, then throw your iPhone in the Nile river, or off an airplane, or throw it in a minefield, and they'll give you a new one, no questions asked? I won't believe that til I see it written down from BestBuy themselves.

Stop talking to me like I'm some second rate. * eyeroll*
Over here, you're not allowed to even try out something at a store before you buy it, and there's no return policy if you don't like the product, and you don't get any trial period. The only thing we have are warranties, and that's if the product is defective, not if you drop it or anything else of your doing. I'm not used to whatever you have in the States, where they offer you insurance for cell phones. As I viewed it before, insurance was only for really important things like your car, house, or life or similar. I just checked out Best Buy's insurance claim, and they offer you a free replacement for accidental damage. They do not however give you a replacement for water damage, loss or theft. Personally, I just think this is dumb. What's stopping me from paying the $15 for one month when I feel like replacing my iPhone, then just chucking it out a 10th story window and go in for a replacement?
And for the record, I said I wouldn't believe it 'til I saw it, not I wouldn't believe it. I explained why right now ^.
Random note: I particularly liked this quote from the insurance exclusions: "Lightning, static electricity, fire, flood, insect infestation, rodents, human/animal bodily fluids, war, terrorism, acts of God or other external causes." Particularly the last few ones :D

there's no return policy if you don't like the product
Depends on how you put it. I've worked at Circuit City and people returned products with some of the wonkiest explanations. I worked in the warehouse and since there wasn't much to do I'd test out products to see if the problem was what they stated. Lots of people would return iPods saying they wouldn't charge, even though they clearly maxed the crap full of limewire'd music and just didn't like it.
Normally the only things you can't return are media, like video games / movies / music. There could be restocking fee's for returned items depending on the stores you go to.
I'm not saying to lie, but be a little more creative in your disliking. Such as, this product doesn't do exactly what I needed it to do.

Either I misunderstood you, or you misunderstood me. I mean in my country, we don't have all that, so I'm not used to the privileges you guys get in the States, which is why I found it hard to believe that they could give you insurance on such things.

well according to this story MobileMe is a good way to get your iPhone back if it's been stolen, though I think it's down to the stupidity of the thief rather than the 'benefits' of MobileMe :)
