Old iPod and playlists

Whenever I switch from playlist to playlist on my iPod, I lose my place on the first playlist. This was a minor annoyance before, but with iTrip, it has become a bigger one. ITrip stations are changed via their own playlist. When I travel on the highway and enter an area where I need to change the radio station, I need to leave my playlist to do that. When I go back to the playlist, I have lost my place and so songs repeat. Using the smart playlists, the iPod remembers that the songs had been played already, but that doesn't keep it from repeating the songs (as though it really didn't remember). I know it remembers because when I hook the ipod to iTunes, the song count increases for every song I played all day, including all the repeats (which are a result of playlists starting over).

I have searched everywhere for help on this. Can someone please advise? Thank you.
