I mean, is it wise to keep 10% or so free or can we safely fill it to the brim with music, videos, photos, etc.? Mine's only 4gig to start with - I'd dearly love to make use of that last 400meg.... :-)

That's a good question.
I'd always assumed that the 4gb or 8gb was total memory, so if you use it all up with music, there'd be no room for 3rd party apps etc.
With the SDK coming out and additional development on the horizon, I'd planned on only using 6-7gb of the 8gb on board.
Then... does it use any spare space for swap space or anything like that ... I wonder what, if any, would be the first thing to crash if you use up 100% of the capacity ???
...
Sorry, I think I've just raised more questions now. :)

More questions indeed. :p
I hadn't stopped yet to consider how much space 3rd party apps might take up - how many or even whether or not I wanted to install any. No, I was thinking purely in terms of swap space. I've always left no less than 10% of my hard disk free (and usually a lot more) in order to keep my machines from getting too bogged down and to keep apps from crashing.
Does the iphone work similarly? Do I need to leave that much swap space?
