I'm sure this has been asked dozens of times but I couldn't find the answer... Let's say you get an activated iPhone, or hack-activate it... Can you just put your AT&T sim inside it if you have a more basic data plan, and use that instead of signing up for an iPhone data plan?

negative. iphone data plan is your only choice. No opting out of text's, no opting out of any features. If you have iphone, you pay for $20 data plan.

I don't get it... How do they know? Like, I currently have a 1500 texts and 5 mb data package... Are they actually going to say I have to upgrade to a more expensive package?

iPhone contract requires an unlimited data plan. People have been known to keep their current plan's texting to use for iPhone, so you may want to call AT&T and ask.
