Hey everyone,
I'm new here :) and was hoping someone could help me with a little problem...
I can't get my iPod touch to connect to the net using my wifi USB dongle! I am using a PC, not a MAC, I don't know if that makes any difference.
Does anyone know if it's possible to get it working or am I wasting my time? I can provide more details if needed ie. Specs etc.
Thanks!!!

Ok, so just to clearify, you window's computer is using an ethernet cable to connect to the internet right? If so, as far as i know those usb dongles are only used to access wifi from a router and not to provide wifi to other computers/ipods/iphones.
The ipod touch doesn't use a usb dongle, it has wifi built in. You need a wireless router.

Hmm, well that’s not how i understand it... Let my try to explain.
Yes, I have my PC connected to my router via ethernet cable.
However, the USB dongle is meant to allow wifi devices to access my internet without the need for a wireless router. It's like the Nintendo USB wifi dongle which lets you connect your Wii or DS to the internet using their wifi capabilities as they can connect to the dongle which is plugged into your internet connected PC. Does this make sense?
By the way, I am not using the Nintendo dongle as I know that it is can only be used with Nintendo devices without the use of certain hacks etc. I have purchased another dongle which can apparently be used with any wifi capable device.

While what you are trying to do may or may not work (I am not familiar with doing things that way), if you purchase a wireless router instead it will do what you are trying to do. The router's job is to route IP traffic from/to multiple devices. If the dongle could be used, then the PC would be doing the routing. That however is not the way these things were truly designed to work. A wireless router is the way to go. I've seen them starting as low as $24.99 on sale at OfficeMax on various sales. Good luck.

I think you're talking about an adhoc network but I think the iPod Touch requires a full wireless router. Not 100% sure though.

DerekVOF is correct. You may not be able to do a peer-to-peer adhoc Network with your touch. However, you can buy a cheap router and it will solve your issues. If the USB dongle is new, take it back, and buy a Belkin router. Run your Ethernet into the router and then connect into your PC (wired). Then you will have WiFi in your house for touch, laptop, PSP, NDS, Wii, or whatever else. Have fun!

You can find a 802.11g router fairly cheap. Tigerdirect has one for only $20 after rebate.

Yeah, the touch only works with Access Points and not Adhoc. So if you can config it as a Access Point it should work, if not you'll need to buy one.

If you have an iMac with built-in airport you can set it up for Internet sharing. Works just fine with the iPod Toicn -just tried it myself.

I tried to setup my iMac to allow my iPod Touch to access the web wirelessly last night and could not get the settings correct. Any tips or how to's? I setup the password, and web sharing on the security settings. My iPod connects and I get the signal strength showing full, but then I get a server not responding message on Safari. The computer access to the internet is fine. I am sure it is somthing simple that I missed. Thanks for any help you can provide. I would hate to have to buy an Airport Express to make it work, when my iMac has Airport built in.

Hmmm... well, I just made sure Airport was turned on. Then went to the Sharing Preference pane. Selected the "Internet" tab. Set "Share connection from" to "Built-in Ethernet" and checked "AirPort" under "To Computers Using" Then clicked on the Airport options. Gave my network a name, let the channel set automatically, enabled encryption using WEP and typed in a password for the key (using 40-bit setting). Hit OK and then hit "Start" on the Sharing pane. If you've got the Airport icon in the menu bar, you'll see it change and there will be an upward point arrow in the middle of the icon.
At least, that's what I did... Seems to work fine for me..

That's exactly what I did, except it said my firewall settings may not allow internet sharing, so I had to select Services, and then personal web sharing, but I am still getting the cannot connect to server on my iPod. I wonder if there are any other settings I need to check. Thanks for the help!
