I went to a mall which has free wi-fi, unpouched the touch and turned it's wi-fi on. it detected two networks, i connected to one and then everytime i tried accessing a webpage, it gave me a "cannot connect to server" message. what am i missing? im guessing theres a lot of technicaility involved in setting up a wi-fi connection on the touch... or is it?
despite repeated efforts it failed to open any webpage. i switched to the other network it detected and ditto.

later, i selected that "forget this connection" option... and next thing i know, the device fails to detect that connection altogether. (it detected the other connection, but still wouldnt work)

so what do i do?

They may have been protected networks. Check out Jiwire's listings of free wi-fi hotspots to find an open one. Meijer in the Midwest offers free wi-fi as does Panera Bread.

I've encountered the same problem before. One of the cities near me has free wifi, and there's a mall I frequent in that city. What worked is after I got that "cannot connect to server" message, I cleared the message and then just hit the refresh button. This then loaded the captive portal page for the city's website, instead of whatever page I was previously on. Then that completed the connection. Now when I go back to the mall, connecting just takes me to the captive portal directly, without giving me the "cannot connect" message.
