is it possible to simply walk into an apple store and buy a new iphone without siging up for at&t??? that is my first question, second is can i then take it home, jailbreak it and unlock it and be good to go with tmobile? am i missing somethign? there are unlocked and activated (jailbroke) iphones on ebay for $500 but if i can get one for 400 plus tax why wouldnt i do it myself??? thanks for the input.

1) Yes. You can buy it without signing up for ATT service.
2) Yes and no. Unlocking it to work with T-Mobile is problematic on a number of levels. First of all, you won't get all of the iPhone's features. Visual Voice Mail for example won't work with T-Mobile. Second, and more importantly, Apple now has a history of disabling unlocked phones with software updates. Most unlocked phones were sent back to their original settings, leaving their owners without a phone for over a week while they waited for the 1.1.1 software to be kracked. Others were left with bricked phones.
Personally, I don't think it's worth the risk or hassle to unlock iPhone. Why not just wait until the end of your T-Mobile contract and switch to ATT? There's practically no appreciable difference between their two services IMO.

thans for getting back to me!!! i appreciate it. btw tmobile is much cheaper than at&t thats the reason id like to stay with tmo,. i could swicth tomorrow to at&t but its too much money.

I went from T-Mobile to AT&T and their basic packages are nearly identical in price. What kind of deal have you got with T-Mobile where it's much cheaper?
