Okay, on the Apple website, here: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=M9126G/A it says that "Connect the FireWire cable up to the iPod power adapter to charge while syncing. Compatible with iPods with dock connector only. "
Does this mean that you can use the iPod with a computer that DOES NOT have Firewire using this cable, and if so, do you need a dock to connect it? I am going to get the 10 GB iPod that doesn't come with a dock. Does that mean I need to purchase a dock on top of the cable?
Any help, (asap), would be greatly appreciated.

when talking about the "dock connector" it just means the new 3G plug. You will not need the dock stand if you want to plug this into a PC that has USB2.0 and no Firewire.

You can just buy the ipod>usb+firewire lead, which enables you to plug the ipod into your computers usb, and into the power adapter (the ipod plugs into the power adapter through a firewire).

For complete clarification there are three plugs on the USB plug that apple provides for windows users with USB 2.0, the first is the actual USB plug. This plugs into the computer. Second the firewire plug which plugs into the AC adapter and the adapter into the wall. The last is the third generation plug that plugs either directly into the bottom on the iPod or into the back of the dock. You can connect the iPod directly or by placing it into the dock.

Hope this helps.
