iPod Backlight Problem

i own a first generation 20GB iPod, with version 1.3 loaded (i don't own a dock, so i can't download version 2.x).

when my backlight is turned on, instead of it being a light, it's a black color, similar to the contrast being turned up on a black and white monitor. for some reason, i can't figure out why my backlight is not a 'light' per se, but a contrasty black. and i know it's not the contrast settings; that's fine - i can see my menus and songs o.k. odd, if it's makes sense?

i can't seem to find any help in these lounges, or on apple's website.

any help would be appreciated.

Was this problem ever resolved? My 2nd gen 10GB iPod is having the same issues and Apple is quoting me a $34 dollars shipping cost to get it resolved.
