View Full Version : Touch Play Count Failure

Besides the issue with smart playlists being defective, my 16gb Touch fails to update the play count when I sync with iTunes.

I've seen comment elsewhere but can't see anything on this forum - has anyone else encountered this problem?

This is especially annoying as the failure of my 4G to sync as the hard drive was dieing was a major part in my purchasing the Touch

The newest firmware I believe was supposed to fix this, but not owning a touch to test it, I can't comment beyond what I've read on the forums. It is, however, yet another well known bug on the new iPods.

Short version is that in the original firmwares no data regarding playcount or skipping was recorded on any of the new iPods - hows that for quality control?

I'm running version 1.1.1 of the firmware and it isn't fixed

It's damned annoying, and I'd have expected a company like Apple to have regression tests for something this basic.

are you manually doing your syncing ie dragging over to the touch, or via playlists? Manual has never updated playcounts

I am not manual doing play playlist, however I am manual copying my songs.

OK, the play count does work if you go with the automatically generated play list. I hadn't used this given the issues with Smartplay lists.

I would point out that the 2nd gen shuffle does quite happily update play count on manual sync.

this sounds similar to the issue noted here:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1141507&tstart=90

i haven't spent enough time testing but my play counts never update, i am guessing that is a result of me turning off my ipod before syncing at all..

i do use smartlists.. and didn't realize they are broken but will look for a thread talking about that scooby

Just to add in my experiences while I was using my Touch (I have gone back to my 5.5G for music until a firmware update is provided).

I was syncing to a series of playlists in ITunes and sometimes when I synced back to ITunes after a long session of listening only the play count and last played were updated on tracks where I changed the rating. This was not consistent though and I couldn't nail down the pattern. I think it may have had to do with memory crashes either with Safari or something else. This combined with the logic problem of Smart Playlists and Live Updating issues made this unusable as an IPod for how I listen to music.

I'm hoping for a firmware update soon so I can use it as a music player as intended.

What is the problem with smart playlists? I just started using them for the first time last week. So far no issue.
