I've had my Touch for a little over a week. This evening, while playing, the Touch crashed. This is a known issue while browsing the web, so I closed Safari, pressed the Music button expecting it to relaunch my music. Rather, the music menu opened for a moment, then closed without displaying anything. The video and iTunes menu did the same. The Photo menu opened but said I had no pictures (though my custom wall paper remained).

Upon plugging the iPod into my computer, it was not recognized by iTunes. I tried all the troubleshooting tips recommended by Apple - tried reinstalling iTunes, closing the device manager Apple device, reset the iPod, etc. Nothing has worked, and I've seen no other documentation on this issue.

I've done quite a bit of searching and have not found this issue. After years of using other devices, this was my first iPod. I was quite pleased with it until now. I'll certainly take it to the Apple store, but if they cannot resolve my issue I'll be completely off the iPod from now on. $400 is a lot of scratch for a buggy device. I really liked it...

Thanks much! I really want to love this thing, but need help!

It sounds like some more then "buggy" in your case. sure Safari can crash out from time to time, but I never seen or ever heard of what yours has done. I think you might have a infant failer and would not count out ipod all together

I have the same problem (so do a few on the Apple forums).

Mine happened whilst surfing... Safari crashed so I restarted it - only later did I realise that all of my photos, videos and music had gone.

Later I noticed that the capacity had dropped from 16Gb to 300Mb!

Then I noticed that iTunes would not see it.

Spoke to apple support who couldn't help, so back it goes :-(

Thanks to rj5555 on the Apple forum :-

Here is how to recover:

1) plug in ipod on your computer
2) start itunes (itunes won´t see you ipod but you need to leave it running)
3) press hold the sleep and home button
4) after 10...15 seconds the screen goes black, release the sleep button but keep on holding the home button
5) after 30 seconds or so you're i pod will enter in emergency recovery mode. (if you use windows you will see an new usb driver being installed) and iTunes will see the ipod
6) release the home button and follow the iTunes instructions to restore.
7) after the restore your ipod will work again with all the storage space available.

Nice one, I wonder if this helps with touchies that just open to a white display?
