ive spent the past few hours trying to figure this out. my ipod touch is visible in windows and everytime i connect it windows xp tells me that an "apple camera" device has been connected. however, itunes does not see the ipod. ive tried seemingly everything, including reinstalling itunes numerous times and trying everything listed here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716

itunes just will not see my new ipod touch. i believe this problem is isolated to my pc and not to a faulty touch because it syncs up to others computers without issue. anyone have any ideas?

Does it have a charge? Try a different USB port like one n the back of the system if using the front. try power cycling the iPod Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPod touch for a few seconds until a red slider appears, then drag the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears. If that doesn't work, restart your computer and reconnect iPod touch to your computer again.

I had the exact problem but I had it fixed by doing this:
I basically uninstalled iTunes and Apple auto update and restarted my computer. After I just reinstalled with the latest version. Connect my iPod touch and it worked.

it does have a charge. i thought maybe something was wrong with my usb ports so i actually went out and bought a new pci usb 2.0 card, which i have this hooked up to.

it really doesnt make any sense to me, and im pretty computer savvy usually

I also had a problem where every time I plugged my iPod touch into the computer, it will restart automatically without warning. All I did to fix it was reinstall the USB 2.0 driver.

BTW, Make sure you uninstall the Apple Auto Update thing too and go to your C: folder or whatever you use and delete the iTunes folder.
I did all these steps for the iPod Touch to finally be recognized on my Windows XP.

Also, make sure your windows is Service Pack 2 and keep it the latest.

What firewall software are you running on your machine - I have Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 on my PC and by default the firewall is set to "HIGH" mode meaning it won't bug me with questions and blocks everything that doesn't already have a rule created.

I discovered that setting the firewall to TRAINING mode and connecting my Touch I found that iTunes requested some new connection rules to connect and see the iPod Touch.
So it was my firewall blocking it all along.

Hope this helps someone.

Fedorov.

no luck, no firewalls are installed and i completely closed out all antivirus programs and unnecessary programs.

my old 3rd gen ipod used to sync up via firewire just fine before it was stolen.. could itunes still be looking for that ipod? ive tried uninstalling and deleting the itunes folder and what not with no luck, am i missing something somewhere? is there some hidden registry keys messing things up?

I had the same problem....

Make sure you have the latest version of itunes!

Click on control panel then adminstative tools then services...

Locate apple mobile service AND ipod service and click on RESTART - you have to do them one at a time.

Then plug your ipod in and turn itunes on and if your like me it will magically work!

i was able to get this working and thought i would come back and post instructions for anyone else who is having similar issues.

1. go to ADD/REMOVE (Control Panel)
2. uninstall ITUNES.
3. uniinstall APPLE MOBILE DEVICE SUPPORT
4. restart WINDOWS
5. install ITUNES

it still doesnt make sense why this works, but there seems to be some sort of a problem with the "apple mobile device support" program.
