Hi there,
I received my 16gb Touch from Amazon.co.uk on the 26th as soon as it was released here in the UK.
Within a few hours I had discovered the dreaded “Negative black” problem (Week 37 build) and had organised with Amazon to get a replacement. Fortunately I saw the threads regarding 1.1.1. update before I returned it. The update appears to have worked, the screen is now much better than it was prior to the update.
I thought my problems were over until…..
I noticed that certain movies appear to “crash” the iPod. I have tested it on a selection of films that I have either ripped from DVD using “PQ DVD to iPod video suite”, or encoded using Sony Vegas Platinum 8.
All of the files run perfectly well on my 80gb Video iPod, Through iTunes and standalone in the quicktime viewer.
What is strange is that the movies appear to crash at the same spot. For example Revenge of the Sith looks superb, right up until Count Dooku gets his head chopped off, whereby the touch crashes. Likewise, Pixar’s The Incredibles gets to a particular scene and again, the device reboots.
However the same thing happens for movies that I have recorded from Video tape and rendered with Sony Vegas. The classic movie “Them” plays for just over half it’s length, then the touch dies.
The movies appear to crash at the same point in time, but not the same time in each movie. It doesn’t appear to be connected with how long the film has been playing for. Video playback just appears to be very temperamental!
It also appears to be independent of whether the wifi is enabled.
My main query is has anybody else experienced this. I have seen a similar post regarding audio playback and crashes, perhaps they’re connected.
In general I think the touch is a masterpiece. The ergonomics are superb; browsing the web is very satisfying on such a small screen (my Nokia N800 feels very clunky by comparison). The only thing I would like more of is battery life when wifi is enabled. It drains away very quickly indeed.
