i want to buy an 8gb Itouch. want to know whats the real capacity

It is around 7.5GB I believe... if you look at the apple support page I believe there is a photo of the 8GB in itunes and it shows the exact capacity...

On my 8GB Touch, Settings->General->About shows the Capacity to be 7.3GB.

The capacity should be about 7.45GB, then minus the OS/firmware, that would be about .15GB. So ultramookie is correct about 7.3GB. The 16Gb touch would have about 14.7GB of usable space.

Why is the 16gb so low? Is there any reason for it being more than .55GB short of the advertised capacity?

With the 5G iPods you had 27.84GB for the 30GB models.... it always seems to be around the same ratio between the real and advertised memory on iPods; it's exactly 7.27GB after OS on the 8GB touch.

The operating system is larger for a iPod Touch than it is for the classic/nano is the reason you see such a capacity difference..that and the decimal/binary crap the memory/hd manufacturers use as a gimmick.

The reason why it's so low is because the actual size compared to the advertised size is approximately 93.1% . So 93.1% of 16 is 14.896 GB. Then minus the os which is about 150MB (guessing since this is the size of the firmware) which leaves us with approximately 14.746 GB. So the 16GB ipod touch would result in about 14.75 GB of useable space.
