Hi,
I've got a new 16gb touch - my second one. The first one had the nasty screen problem. This one has a problem whereby it just skips songs - starts to play them then just skips to next. It's consistent on certain songs that just won't play, but the same songs play fine on iTunes and on other iPods.
Two questions:
- I'd like to get the unit into diagnostics mode but can't find any way to do this on the touch. Any help?
- Any thoughts on the skipping music? It's not a hard drive, so this shouldn't be happening!
Any help appreciated!

it's prolly the way they are encoded or they are damaged, but it is kind of wired they play everywhere else. I would say take the unit back.

I had a similar problem when shuffling all my songs and using safari at the same time. It wouldn't skip songs though, it would actually just stop playing in the middle of any song and then if I pressed the home button twice to get the music controls it wouldn't respond. I corrected it by simply powering off and then on again and it hasn't done it since. Maybe powering off and on again will help, and if not try a complete restore... Good luck!

I've actually deleted and re-synched songs to this device and then to a hard drive unit and a nano. The same songs are consistently a problem on the Touch but not on the other units or iTunes.
the "genius" had me take another shot at restore, which I had already done. This didn't fix it. They swapped the unit this AM - and the new one does it too!!!

UPDATE:
I finally figured out that all of the songs that the touch has problems playing were ripped using a version of iTunes from '04. It turns out that the iPod touch has some problem with the ripped music from that period. I was finding songs that wouldn't play from lots of different CDs that were ripped in the same few days. By re-ripping the songs with the latest iTunes the problem went away.
Ugh - lots of ripping later (the bad songs were all from my first huge rip fest with iTunes, so I've had to re-rip LOTS of CDs) the touch plays songs flawlessly
