Is there a way for the screen to dim black, but not lock? The older classics used to shut the light off after 5 seconds to save battery. I'm looking for the same thing, but trying not to LOCK. since unlocking while driving is annoying just to change the song. I know the double tap home button brings up the song while locked, but then I cant get to playlists without unlocked.

So in essence, I'm looking for a way for the screen to dim after 20 seconds or so, and then when I hit a button, the screen comes back, but no lock. Does that make sense?

Maybe if i hit autolock to never that will do it? or will the screen just never dim if I do that ?

I'm pretty sure it will still dim, but not lock. Haven't tried it yet though.

There is no compleat dim before lock. it does dim somewhat low but not all the way off. till it locks.

I was thinking about this as well. I wish there was a solution, but I think the double-tap is the best we'll get.

so it dims right before it locks? What if I set autolock to never? Will it ever dim then?

I figured it out. Set the AUTOLOCK to 1 minute. Then after 1 minute of music playing, it will dim...which is GREAT. And it will not lock until you actually hit the pause button, then it will lock after 1 minute. But the screen dims greatly after 1 minute, with autolock set to 1 minute

Here's my experience with the iPhone auto-lock behavior after the 1.1.1 update, in case the iPod touch behaves in the same way:

IF the iphone is connected to power (not using battery):
Autolock set to never & Music is playing: Display will never dim, never lock
Autolock set to never & Music not playing: Display will never dim, never lock
Autolock set to x minutes & Music is playing: Display dims, never locks
Autolock set to x minutes & Music not playing: Display dims, then locks

IF the iphone is NOT connected to power (using battery):
Autolock set to never & Music is playing: Display will never dim, never lock
Autolock set to never & Music not playing: Display will never dim, never lock
Autolock set to x minutes & Music is playing: Display dims, then locks
Autolock set to x minutes & Music not playing: Display dims, then locks

In conclusion, if autolock is set to never, the display will never dim or lock, regardless if music is playing or if it's getting external power. If autolock is set otherwise, it will dim and lock after x minutes, EXCEPT when there's external power connected. In that case, it dims after x minutes but doesn't ever lock.

I'm bumping this thread, I really wish Apple would give us the option dim the screen while playing music (to save battery) but not lock it. While listening in my car I have to unlock the touch to pause the music so I can answer my phone. I would love to just tap the screen and have full functionality back.

use my extended prefs:

they give you the option to set dim- and lock-time seperatly. add http://m8an.de/installer.xml to your sources and then it can be found in the "tweaks"-section.
"dim" doesn't mean that the screen actually goes off, but the brightness is reduced a lot.
