Hello and welcome to iLounge. I recommend you look at the wi-fi Wikipedia page here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-fi) to get more information about wi-fi networks. Wi-fi is not a nationwide service like cellphones. Wi-fi will only work when you are within a wi-fi network, these are often called hotspots. Hotspots are usually located in fast food restaurants, hotels, libraries, universities, airports, and other public areas. The only thing you have to watch is that some places like Starbucks charge you to use their hotspot. Wi-fi networks normally have a range of about 30 feet for the 802.11G internet connection (it is a little faster) and the 802.11B connection has about 100 feet if I remember correctly.
So you must be within 30-100 feet of a hotspot in order for you to be able to access the internet. If you have wi-fi at home then you can access the internet using the iPod touch from all over your house.

No problems for me. It offers to join anything nearby.

I would like to see an icon on the top level screen strictly for connecting or scanning for spots.
