I had it happen once, thought about it for a moment, then I unplugged the iPod, shut it down completely (not sleep), turned it back on, and once I plugged it back in it synced fine.

I have consistently had this problem since getting my week 38 16Gb touch with v1.1.1 firmware. I'm using XP Pro, and have removed every USB accessory with the exception of mouse and keyboard. I am exclusively using the integrated USB ports on the motherboard. I can copy between 50 - 125 songs at a time before receiving the "device timed out" message.
I have performed a restore twice, with no effect. The behavior is the same on all three of my PC's.
At this point, I assumed this was a USB power issue, so today I bought a powered USB. This also had no effect on the problem.
This is my 4th iPod, but the only one that has this problem. Very disappointing. Guess its going back tomorrow.

I don't have a cure, but I've had the exact same thing happen every time I try to sync, and I've tried everything. I reinstalled iTunes, reinstalled the firmware, tried different USB ports and spent a half hour on the phone with Apple technical support. I returned the Touch for another one and had the same problem. I can sync anywhere betwen 20 and 100 songs before the "disc not found" error appears.
Technical support did suggest reseting the sync history, which is an option under "iPhone" in the preferences menu. It didn't work for me, but you might give it a try.
Also--I note that some of my album artwork in cover flow doesn't match up properly with the songs on the Touch, but it's fine in iTunes. I can only assume that's somehow happening because of the sync errors.

if there is no fix within a week i'm gonna return it to best buy. I don't want to see this message everytime i want to sync something. It seems like most windows xp users are getting this error

OK, I think I got it working. It looks like this is an iTunes issue for me. I first uninstalled everything related to Apple from Add / Remove Programs. For me this included various iPod Updaters, iTunes, Apple Software Update and Apple Mobile Device Support. I then created a new user in Windows XP and granted this user administrator rights. I rebooted and logged into this new account. I now reinstalled iTunes. Finally, I had been managing my music manually and I changed this to auto sync ( I doubt this is necessary but I'm letting it run through now ). Already, I'm halfway through the sync (~1200 songs) and the most I've ever been able to get on in one shot was about 130. It looks like when iTunes upgraded from my previous version to 7.4.3.1, something went wrong. I'll update when it finishes syncing.

Well, its not perfect and it's definitely MUCH slower to transfer songs onto than my Nano or other iPods. I was able to to get 1900 out of 2600 songs on before I got the device timed out error the first time. I then was able to get another 350 on before getting the error. The last 350 went on fine, but then I dicovered my album art was mostly boned.
Even though I fixed all of my stuff last week, 4 outta 5 albums didn't have the art anymore. I selected all of the albums in my library and did a get album art which fixed everything. I then had to resync the iPod. It selected the first song of nearly every album to update. (a total 0f 292).
After this last sync, the touch is good to go. Still, it seems a long road to go down for something as basic as getting music on the player. I'm guessing there's issues with throughput in the new OS.
I hope this can be fixed with further firmware upgrades. I'm guess I'm gonna stick with it since I will rarely transfer a full 14Gb at a time from now on.

Wow. That is a lot to go through. Like you, now that I have the stuff on there, I'm going to keep it, since I'll just be adding 10 or so tracks at a time. I'm hoping a new version of Itunes or firmware will eventually fix the problem.
I was curious about the album art fix you mentioned. Are you saying that once you updated the artwork again in iTunes, the player synced the corrections? That would be outstanding.

One good thing about using the auto-sync is that it checks for updated files. So, if you update the album art in the library, the next time you sync, iTunes will update those files.

I'm having this exact issue with an iPhone and it's driving me crazy. I restored my PC a couple of days ago, and ever since, the iPhone will not complete a sync without giving me on of these errors. My iPod Classic syncs just fine. My iTunes library works just fine. Everything else on my PC works just fine, but the iPhone refuses to finish syncing. I've done everything I can think of, but nothing seems to work.
I hope there is a fix for this. I'm fairly certain this is strictly a software issue, as my iPhone CAN sync a few things at a time and everything else works fine with it. Same thing with my PC. I'm wary about going without a phone for three days only for the same thing to happen again if I restore my PC in the future.

I have the best luck when I leave the PC alone during syncing. I think its some sort of USB compatibility issue. I have since been able to find a computer at work that was able to quickly sync without errors, so it's really an issues between my Touch and my main computers. I'm on my second Touch (both week 38) and they both behaved the same.
I may pick up a new internal USB card if this continues. It's a little frustrating when something as basic as USB has a problem. I have numerous other USB accessories, none of which have this problem. I'm hoping it can be fixed in firmware

Honestly, I'm convinced that anything I do will be random luck. The fact that things were working before I did a restore of Windows XP and now the iPhone won't sync properly is not a coincidence. It's funny how sometimes you can have problems when your system is old and cluttered as well as when you have a fresh install.
I'm thinking that by just dealing with things for a few weeks, the iPhone will go back to syncing properly. It's probably wishful thinking, but considering the ONLY problem I've had after the restore is with the iPhone, I don't feel like dropping money on stuff.

hey I'm sorry If I'm just bringing an old problem back up, but I am getting the device timed out message. I also get a problem when trying to restore. It seems like it is a USB issue, if anyone has 1.1 that is probably the problem. I don't however and I can't seem to figure out what is going on. Tomorrow i an going to try and use a hub and see what I can find out. I'd appreciate it if anyone could help out with any ideas I'm willing rlto try a couple different things. Thanks.

Hi, just when reading these posts, it reminded me of a prob I had:
I had similar errors (had nothing to do with iPod or iTunes) because the updating process (!) was running on mutliple cpu cores. When I set the process to use only one of my dual-core cpu in the task manager, the process ran thru.
But really, just another (presumably) stupid idea that came to my mind when reading this.

Today I went ahead and bought a powered usb hub with no luck. Now I get a new error, iTunes cannot sync with iPhone because of an unknown error or something along those lines. I don't know if anyone has a fix for that one, I couldn't find it anywhere. So anyways, I am going to call windows support tomorrow, both apple and hp haven't been able to help me. If I can't get it to work I am going to take it to the genius bar.
So some quick questions, the genius bar should be free right? And do people normally bring their laptops, I have a windows laptop so I don't think I'm going to bother bringing it in.
thanks again.

Yeah the Genius bar is free. They might be able to help. Some others that have been having sync issues have tried a USB card which has seemed to help. Not sure if that'd help you though.

My syncing problem is cured so far as I can tell. I was getting that message a long time ago, but am no longer. I was running iTunes on my laptop (which is dual core if that has any bearing on the issue.) When I swapped to a VM on my main PC (requires VM due to it being 64 bit) my problems went away. As far as I can tell, it's an issue with the USB itself. Perhaps the power is too low or unstable. Perhaps it's because the USB drivers are bad? I don't know. The version of Windows is the EXACT SAME used on both PCs. The problem presents itself even on a clean install with no MS updates. It is still there after a complete load with all MS updates.
I think it's because the laptop blows.
